I'm not so much upset by people liking Light or not wanting him to die, but by people being surprised or upset that he died that way. When you look at the series as a piece of literature, Light dying in the end is powerful; it is symbolic and means something. If he had lived or won against Near, it wouldn't have meant as much, and it would have sent a different message. I like Death Note's ending from a literary standpoint, because I can tell what the author is trying to say. To me, complaining about Light dying at the end of Death Note is like complaining about Romeo and Juliet dying at the end of the play.
But to be clear, I'm talking only about Light dying due to Near and Mello's (sort of) teamwork and Mikami's fuckup. The running stuff, I don't really care for. I prefer the manga ending (and even the movie ending) to the anime ending.
Even though Light was my favorite character, I (and many other Light fans) probably wouldn't mind it as much if it were L that had defeated Light as Near and Mello weren't all that great in my opinion. Also, the fact that Light would actually trust someone (after freaking out over Misa's fuck up) and with a niche lifestyle is beyond me. As you know, the author of the manga was asked to extend the series which forced him to make the crappy arc that all Light fans hate.
Sure it has an underlying message, that good always triumphs over evil and there is nothing wrong with it. But again, it's the means that really pisses the fans off.

Code Geass on the other hand is one series that I honestly doubt I can ever force myself to watch.
