Yes indeed, the second season in general was horrible. Sometimes they just shouldn't expand to much and learn when it goes to far. Also didn't like when they all of sudden started to introduce new Shinigami's and the second note book, but on the other hand, maybe it would have been to little material to make such a long serie.
I am still in love with the series due to it's moral duality, I think everyone should watch it just to gain insight in what an utopia might be like. I also don't know anyone whom have watched/read it who doesn't side with either L or Kira.

With an honorable mention to Bleach because a like a lot of what's going on in it, though the pacing is a bit off for my taste. Fullmetal Alchemist was pretty good too, though I think the story ended on the wrong note. They hadn't even touched eastern alchemy, which depending on your source is what western alchemy was based off of loosely.
