It is better to go with preferences but in a broader view movies are a good way to start anime, Spirited Away is good movie and for an action movie watch Sword of the Stranger. A lot of Miyazaki films are great and simple to understand.
For series go with Minami-ke and Seto no Hanayome(simple and funny), Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo for action, and if you want to introduce him to harem without the ecchi go with Ouran High School Host Club or Kurenai.
Later on you can introduce the newcomer to anime like Kino no Tabi, Ayakashi - Japanese Classic Horror (Bakeneko Arc), Hellsing Ultimate, Kara no Kyoukai, Genshiken, Welcome to the NHK, Mushishi, Monster, Kaiba, Pale Cocoon, Eve no Jikan, Kigeki - Comedy, Planetes, and Bartender.
It is still better to go with preferences and it is better if beginners know a little about japanese culture too since anime comes from japan.
Edit: Just remembered, you can go to
Myanimelist.net, it's a very easy site to use to find anime to watch or manga to read. The site does have a very strict no direct downloads so you can't download anime but it can help you find a very good anime to start with.
