I have no idea how it happened. It just did.
Maybe it's because you get to 'work' with an anime girl. Don't know why the previous Vocaloids didn't take off but maybe it was the character design that got everybody's attention.

^Indeed, and if we are to derail this topic with who's the best Vocaloid I'll have to state that Meiko and Miki is the best.
On topic: Also remember that Miku have gotten promoted to the point that she has her own videogame besides the Vocaloid Software. This might have done quite much to increase her popularity.

on a side note, you can't really have a legit "Best vocaloid" argument because everyone has their own tastes.
If you must discuss, then it should be the composers, as they all use the same singers.

True, I should had made it clearer that what I meant was what Vocaloids voice that you like the most/think is the best and that it was meant to be about personal tastes. My apologies for being unclear.
As for composer I'd say Supercell. Ironic tho' because Ryo rarely use any other software but Miku and I'm not to fond of her voice, not robotic enough to sound good in that way, but neither is it human enough to sound like a "real" singer. But Ryo really bring forth a smooth, more human tone than what most composers manage.
