As for furry people, I don't really consider them Otaku because their fetish clashes with the norm. lets just called them "Animal fanatics".

anifan is probably the best choice. (i love animeniacs but it would be too confusing for some of the ... slower devotees and would never catch on).
Honestly no one shoudl call themselves otaku because i have yet to meet one noth-american person who lives up to the name. To bean otaku you have to be hard core, like think about those trekkies (start trek fans) who go totally hard core about it and are two hair strands short of becoming cultists. The ones who would rather die than see their precious action figures taken out of their original packaging. The ones who can't get a hard-on unless their (equally obsessed and usually unatractive) girlfriend calls them "hot spock". these are star trek otaku.

I'm more than happy to just say "yeah, I like anime" as opposed to going with "I'm an anifan! :D" or whatever name people wanna use.

Otaku is a term for someona being obsessed for his interest so much that he/she disconnects from reality, also I don't think that if you like anime you need a name... I mean you don't call actiontards to people who like action movies...
So "I like/enjoy watching anime" is fine
