You obviously haven't watched much of Major because as much as Goro is egocentric, one-minded, and goal-oriented, he cares as much about others and his teammates. This extends from the later half of the first season and into the fourth season, and there's no way you can be playing at the Minors level without having team spirit. I've heard of Ookiku Furikabutte, but apparently people said the anime sucked while the manga rocked.
I know, I know him too well. I've seen Major from its 1st episode up until its 4th season which I'm currently watching. I've seen an equal share of his ups and downs, I even got emotional when his father died and so many things have happened since.
I just wanted to express the difference between One Outs and the USUAL sports oriented anime and I just used Major as an example. I just wanted other people to know that they're not going to see a character like Goro in One Outs, if you know what I mean. I'm not trying to degrade Goro's character or anything...
~in addition to that, most people usually don't like watching sports anime because of characters like Goro who's always eager to give it their best to win and in the end, no matter what adversity they face, they always come out on Top..it's sort of a given don't you think...while in One Outs, winning the game is just 3rd priority!
(sports adapted anime usually have at least one major setback)
SlamDunk - lose to Kainan
Hajime no Ippo - lose to Eiji Date
Buzzer Beater - lose to whatever alien team I don't even want to remember!
Major (3rd season) - lose to Kaido
Eyeshield 21 - lose to Seibu Wild Gunmans
~last but not the least, I still believe that OokiFuri is a much decent BASEBALL anime than Major..I suggest you to see it for yourself in case you haven't.
