I think Ace had to solidify his body (meaning, not be made of fire) so that the fist wouldn't hit Luffy. If he'd made his body flame, the fist just would have gone through and hit Luffy.

This made me think of something and when I checked Klown is right. If you look at the end of 573 and then the first 2 pages of 574. You can tell that Ace is using his powers. Why the lava dudes fist did not just continue then, I don't know. But especially with 574 page 2 you can tell at the top that Ace has Fire around him. And you would assume that if he was on fire from the lava punch. That the rest of the chapter his body would be burnt or still burning at least. Instead of just where he was punched.
EDit: See how it seems as though flames are coming from ace and the lava guy is not touching him in that image.

Logia has element weaknesses that render them completely useless against stronger tiers. Fire can burn up to a certain degree while lava can burn even higher than that which is why Ace got burned in the first place. Think of it like in FF terms where you have just regular Fire and Firaga.

Or is this just based upon Akainu's statement in the latest chapter?
