Sorry, just not worth my time just to have a Kite-esque ending ruining my parade, at least not for 26 episodes only to be trolled by the death of the main character. I mean, in School Days we saw Makoto's death a possibility, and as we got further into the series, it was becoming a sure thing. But after 26 episodes? Come on, we deserve a happier ending than that.
So if the main characters die in the end of a series, it automatically falls under the category of unhappy (or bad/troll) endings? - Not in the slightest.
Last time I checked my memory's black-box, Reiji's promise only consisted of taking Elen back to the place whence she came to prove that she once existed. So he finally did and such a joyous-event it was. There's your happy ending right there.
Quite obviously, he still had this hidden agenda even from long ago that comes with that promise. His selfless dream; his little side-quest if you'd prefer to call it like that. And that is to make, most probably, the most important girl in his life smile genuinely. - Unknowingly, he already did manage to do so. One might say it's unfair to him but looking back on how he had failed to keep his words to some of those who trusted him, I'd say it serves him just right. While I'm not saying he well deserved death, it was nevertheless most fitting. I think the word "KARMA" suits to describe it perfectly.
We viewers were all so very fortunate to have had seen the realization of Reiji's wish, something that he himself couldn't. Now, doesn't that make you just a little bit more happier? - It sure did make me smile. And likely so did Das, considering his disposition towards Reiji.
I'd say this again... For me (and at the very least just me) The ending was very transparent; pure and very true to every single damn thing that this series ever stood for, simple as that. A fairy tale ending and such "And they lived happily ever after" just won't cut it... and thus they reached the end of the road. "Owari" :)
