Why must all the good things come to an end pretty much all at once?

Presentation vise, ep 25 was great making me once again appreciate the show for choosing subtleness and buildup instead of shit hitting all sorts of fans. The duel alone is a great example of that. They could have went for Reiji and Cal wrecking havoc and destruction while fighting each other but decided on settling it with one shot. Having the fact that they're both skilled and efficient assassins in regard, this was a great service to the overall realism. The more flashy parts were good too and I especially liked the scene of Cal blowing up her bike and the symbolism behind it.
There was no turning back... yeah right! Nevertheless, there was no doubt that this was a very good episode from beginning to end. Is it Mio, Elen, or Cal? I think we must all obviously know by now whom Reiji has chosen.
Just so you know, it was once again quite funny to find yet some sort of similarity in between Drei and Canaan and in both the second to the last episode of their respective series. Surely you realize that the "haunting of ghosts" scenes are what I'm referring to.
Also, Shiga's luck not only impresses me but surprises me as well. I guess we're really of the same... whatever that is. I still can't quite believe that I was so looking forward to seeing someone(a character), who closely resembles me, get killed. And to think that I had already envisioned myself in his place, for it not to happen... sucks!

Alas, the ep also hit me with the possibly greatest qualms I have towards the series, mainly how unbelievably cruel it was towards Cal (not talking about that ridiculous growth this time) and how inconsistent of a character Reiji is. His whole resolve into shooting Cal seemed shallow. Given a mindset he had in the earlier parts of the show, I would have understood him doing it out of sheer obedience or due to that animalistic survival instinct of his. Such as it was however, it simply seemed like he'd given up on saving Cal without ever trying to do so.
For me, I wouldn't say that his resolve was or seemed too shallow. The previous episode should have pretty much foreshadowed his decision, about the time when he had learned of Elen's absence in school that day. Well, if running all over the place for hours in desperate pursuit/search of someone is not meaningful in the least bit, I no longer know what else could possibly be. And with Mio's phonecall in this episode, it gave him the push (or some form of reassurance/support) he needed. It was clearly seen/expressed in his face and seemingly relieved (body)gesture afterwards, as if his ridden all of his doubts in wholeheartedly accepting what he must do.

It's just that Reiji completely failed to sell his reasoning and resolve for killing her considering that the series is desperately trying to picture the current him as a caring and good-natured person.
He didn't, at least not for me. His reasoning, resolve, determination and/or whatnot were all fully justified when he had finally made ONE firm decision; to keep his promise to Elen. He has lived in such a cruel world for much too long since then to know better that he is not capable of saving anyone. He never gave up on Cal which in all actuality, he very well did save her the only way he knew how.

To make things worse he fell apart the moment the duel was settled as if all of this wasn't his fault. That's now twice that you've abandoned her, jerk.
He never went against his character buildup as he proved to us by what you referred to as "he fell apart". It just shows you how much he truly cares for her but there's just nothing else that could have been done. He took responsibility by facing her and it was the price that he had to pay for his fault; the cross that he must now and will forever on carry.

Makes me wonder how much thought and effort he'd really put to the promise he gave Cal in the past since it once again seems he was only taking from others while giving nothing more than sugar-coated, shallow words in return.
You said it yourself, he's now not only abandoned her once but twice so what's the point of keeping a promise which has already been long broken?

Cal displaying much of how she'd used to be and how she simply wanted him to notice her made the whole thing all the more tragic. Nothing wrong with impact and shit but I'd really prefer this happened to someone else instead of my favorite character of the series.
I feel you bro and even if I myself truly feel sorry for her, that's just the way it goes sometimes. Remember, I just so recently lost a love-one...

Ein on the other hand just gained a buttload of survival probability and had a good overall appearance. Then again, basing on how efficient Reiji is in keeping his promises she may end up kicking the bucket in the first two minutes of the final ep along with Mio and half of his classmates ...
Lol, but seriously, I do agree and am quite comfortable with Elen's chances in the finale. She very well deserves to find HAPPINESS that she even has yet to experience thus far in her life, or at least in her life since the beginning of the series; in which Cal already had found (2 years ago) with Reiji.
PS: Though I can't quite agree with your point of views, you're still as awesome as ever in handing out those very opinionated thoughts/words of yours. Guess who just rep'd you?
