post apocalyptic/sci fi-ish anime?

Hey all.
I'm pretty new to anime in general. (haven't seen much of it, couple movies, generally avoid any North american released tv shows)
Just wondering if anyone could suggest any movies/dvds/whatever that have a kind of sci fi/futuristic and/or a post apocalyptic theme?

hmmm sci-fi well in your mecha category you got evangelion, gundam 00, tenga toppa gurren laggan, full metal panic, raxaphon [sorry if spellt incorrect]
out of those i belive the ones that fit into post apocaliptic are evangelion [kinda because technicly half of earths population is gone tho you cant realy tell]
and gurren laggan due to the fact that in the first half of the anime most of human civilization lives underground in tiny colony's

All of these anime take place in crapsack worlds gone wrong in some sort of catastropy where the impact of said event is felt to the very day the story takes place (instead as far away mythology as some other titles handle it), so prepare for some Mad Max overtones and gritty survival drama.

Simply epic. Especially on the gfx level. The story isn't really original, but the ending was just... beautiful. Nearly brought a tear to my eyes...

Manipulative, melodramatic crap that tries to spoon-feed you the "Japanese spirit of community". Not recommended in my book. A more thorough trashing can be found here:

Well, one of the problems in requesting a post-apocalyptic story is that often they are fantasy in nature and their post-apocalyptic nature becomes a plot twist when ancient technology is discovered.
I can think of two very good examples of this, but I'd be remorse to spoil it by giving away their true nature ahead of time.

I may sound like I'm contradicting myself, but I partially agree with the blog. >.>
I really only liked Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 because it was something different. It wasn't like most of the other animes that I have watched. I like Variety.
