Romance Anime/Manga What Do You Look For?

As the topic said i want to know what everyone in the Fakku family thinks a romance anime/manga would you like or should contain. For me:
1)Good Plot of course. When i said good plot i mean good storyline with twists and turns and surprises. I like it especially when the it is a story i can't predict example: Ichigo 100% great twist in the end recommended :lol: :lol:
2)Rivalry. A given! without rivalry there plot twists will be quite limited and it also gives the viewers/readers more suspense like who will he/she end up with :P
Those are basically what i look for in a romance genre Anime/Manga Hope everyone will reply and if possible give some suggestions or examples of such anime/manga Thanks!!

elfen lied fits all that criteria.

-For one i have to like somethin bout the main character.
-Rivalry does make the story go in different directions.
-Different obsticals to overcome
-Hot chicks (duh)
-Art has to be acceptable or i wont bother
-a death can make it interestin

I don't, if there's no violence, I have no interest. I can stand romance amongst action, but just romance bores the hell out of me.

Tsubasa is a great example of what I like in a romance anime.
Then there's the manga Sensual Phrase. Average girl with a really big hottie. Usually it's reversed - average guy with super hot girl.
It's just nice to see it the other way around sometimes. Makes me think I might have a chance some day. :roll:

Like what others have already mentioned, good story and character development, without being too draggy, will definitely be a plus. When it comes to manga and anime, I usually tend to place more priority on those titles with excellent artwork/animation.
There are also a few romance series which disappointed due to their eventual harem development.

Focus on parallell plotlines, with the relation effecting the world saving, everyday life, mental health, whatever of those in love.
I got to admit, I've never even seen a romance without other major elements and plots, and I take that as a sign that it just doesn't get romantic if you can't somehow reflect the importance of the relationship in other aspects of life.
I'd even go as far as to say that the non-romance makes a romantic anime/manga good.
It's also important properly introduce every character, telling the story from every perspective. Childhood friends really are awesome for this, as it makes it easier to retell the ever so important past of the characters without losing focus on the other characters and the general plot.
Not saying that childhood friends makes a better romance, it just is the lazy way to do things.

Romantic comedies annoy me. I'll stick to action, "regular" comedy, and horror.

personally i useually jump on the band wagon and enjoy to read all of the internet favorite romance manga/anime, but as of late ive unveiled a rather sadistic side to my liking of romance manga/anime. I now find it much more enjoyable if there is a tragedy theme in the romance aswell, it has to be a really brutal tragedy like "OMFG! oh no you didnt manga director" to have the best effect but it really makes it more enjoyable in my opinion. :)

Harems are fine as long as there is a main couple that share mutual love beyond those of the other girls.

I appreciated Shuffle! in the respect that he actually chose a girl and stuck with the decision. I wish there were more shows that did this.

I'm also not a fan of just romance. It has to have violence in it as well. They both complement each other, as weird as that sounds. But the most important thing for me is CLOSURE!!! There must be closure; I can't stand a confused, weak and hesitant male lead that can't choose between two (sometimes more) girls. That's why I stay away from Tenchi and To Love Ru and stuff like that. It's irritating. Either choose a girl or have fate choose it for you, like some tragedy that spices things up.
