I'm also not a fan of just romance. It has to have violence in it as well. They both complement each other, as weird as that sounds. But the most important thing for me is CLOSURE!!! There must be closure; I can't stand a confused, weak and hesitant male lead that can't choose between two (sometimes more) girls. That's why I stay away from Tenchi and To Love Ru and stuff like that. It's irritating. Either choose a girl or have fate choose it for you, like some tragedy that spices things up.Pretty much this.

I have a love/hate relationship with rivalries. Case-in-point, Peach Girl. One of my favorite series, but the back and forth between Toji and Kairi killed me at some points. Still, makes for good drama.
I also like when the main person has some competition. I get bored if the person they love just falls into their arms.

A unique factor that stands out which unfortunately not many romance genre anime/manga have( Why is it that the pink/orange/blonde/brunette haired girl with big boobs always gets to be the heroine) I want one where let's say the main heroine is the mechanic/scientist girl(the girl in my avatar) type who has height and breast size issues and the main character is the cool icy delinquent bishounen type who wows all the girls but acts like a total jerk like Kyouya Hibari from Katekyo Hitman Reborn

Romance with a quasi-COMPLETE answer of which the male main character will go out with. I liked Ladies x Butlers (Though being a blatant fanservice anime) and I understand that the manga hasn't finished yet, but at least hint which girl you like. Personally I would have chose Selnia.

Lots of adversity. Something like Kimi ga Nozomu Eien. I'd really love to see a romance with the same amount of tragedy as Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica though.
That being said, I read mainly shoujo, so I can read almost anything (even if the whole manga is just cheese slapped between cheese buns or the art is shit).

As many others have said, I usually look for a good plot, but I also look at the main characters/ If they are too bland/stereotypical, it usually makes the romance less interesting for me.

"Different" Characters, or should I say "Attractive Characters (in a good way)". That's what I usually prioritize when watching romance animes. Though I don't watch Romance a lot, but Kimi ni Todoke has caught my interest and it makes me addicted.
Also, it needs to be well-paced, and end in a way that I can tolerate. Good ending preferably, but I don't mind sad/touching conclusion as well.
