the quality of american dubs.

ive been thinking, one of the main reasons most people watch subs, besides just getting it a few months or years sooner then the English versions is that the dubbing usually sucks balls. for instance compair the american version of k-on and it will make you cry. theres just no emotion behind the voices.

and then i had this thought, wouldn't it make sense for there to be jsut as much emotion as the jap versions? as they already have access to them and im sure the voice actors can watch it and study there characters, so you think they'd be able to "get into there head" so to say and project emotion better. but in many it fails horribly. why is that?

I don't know about that. Bleach, Elfen lied, Gantz and DBZ was pretty good.

While dubs have for the most part been vastly inferior to the original Japanese, I find that they're slowly improving, with a number of exemplary titles. All of Miyazaki's movies have turned out great- and there are a few anime that did fairly well too. (Black Lagoon, Burst Angel, Haruhi Suzumiya (except the songs), TTGL- and others such as School Rumble were fairly decent as well.)

I think it's mostly that companies are simply trying to minimize costs, since the anime industry isn't as big outside of Japan. Hence, we usually end up with sub-par voice acting/dialogue adaption/etc.

............... why is that avi suddenly terrifying. anyway i know theres a few that are good but theres just as many that are horrible. such as k-on, which i was looking forward to hearing in English, until i watched all of five minutes of it, i still want to tear my ears off when i think of it


edit @magee. im sorry but isisnt that a bit stupid? there only fualing there own downfall there, by giving us crapy dubs it just makes us run to the subs.

Who knows what the Hell the execs are thinking. But if the companies are still here, it must be because there are far more people buying (and perhaps even enjoying) the dubs than I'd like to think about.

i shal never understand how anyone can like that, they probaly dont know how to get the subs, tis the onyl thing i can think of

[font=Verdana][color=green]Yeah, dubs generally do suck. However, some jobs are nicely done, notable examples being Bleach, Death Note, Haruhi and Monster. I can deal with bad dubs, but some can be unwatchable - Clannad suffered for this.

i agree, english dubs rly sucks, maybe if they stop using so "childish" voices could be better...of course not sayin they must use old-man voice xD. but sometimes is awful to hear a young anime character with a rly kid voice.

Really, even if the dubs do suck *coughluckystarcough* I'd rather watch them than read the subs all the time. But for the most part I really don't mind dubbing, some I find rather enjoyable, but even those have some very awkward dialog choices and seeing emotions with the dubs is better than reading it and missing the on screen action, although just subbed won't prevent me from watching it, I'd rather see dubbed.

@SamRavster: I disagree, I enjoyed Clannad's dubs, especially Andrew Love (Akio) he is just awesome.

Gurren Lagann was horrible in dub.

in your opinion...but i managed to make it through the dub, it was ok.

There are rare times when I prefer the dub over the original.
Golden Boy was hilarious because of the main English voice actor.

I generally prefer subs to dubs but I do appreciate good dubs. Code Geass had great dubs albeit, them calling C.C. C2 makes me want to pund the dudes in the face. The Hellsing OVAs are another prime example.

well they're pronouncing it c-two in japanese so it kinda makes sense don't you think?

I'd say that Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu's dub was good, although the English accent was too good for me to understand, but I normally hate dubs, I'd say that animax does pretty good job with dubbing but not too good.

I bet the American VAs cares about getting the money only so they don't put their heart and soul on VAing and thus they lacking the emotion factor.



How hard is it to read, it only takes a second for me to read a sentence in my mind so I don't think its easy to miss the on-screen action either.

You're asking why people can't dub? I think what people are missing is the exaggeration in the voices. I was playing Luminous Arc 2, and I didn't really like the voice-overs for a character. I thought it was too exaggerated, but went online later to read that this specific character's acting was done exceptionally well. I didn't understand so I went back and I did listen to it again. It was good and I started to like it. The reason I think it didn't flow with me the first time was that it was just a single image of a character with little movement with the voice.


Some people are slow readers, I am one. And it does take away from seeing whats on the screen if your constantly trying to read something. I think what I'd want is to have complete devoted attention to visuals and audio rather than both plus reading.

Some english dubs are good, some english dubs are bad,
but ALL japanese voices are good.

American dubs are slowly getting better, but are still nowhere near the quality of Japanese voice actors.

When characters cry in anime (e.g. Angel Beats)
Japanese actors really bring out the tears in you.

English dubbers are literally just acting out the scene for the sake of acting it out.

Don't really have a problem with Eng dubs, but ONE THING that annoys me the most is when they use WESTERN ACCENTS!

So they think it's ok that a Kansai Dialect is changed into some stupidish-Cowboyish Accent.

or for some reason PURE JAPANESE Characters suddenly able to have British Accents...

I only watch Studio Ghibli dubs as they have a very high quality. Perhaps it is because the US localization is done by Disney, so they can a afford more, and be more flexible, in comparison to smaller studios.
