Tragic Anime Couples Who Deserve Better?

To start off, let me inform everyone that this thread may contain possible spoilers for a number of anime titles, especially if you are one who does not catch up with the latest anime-related news/gossip. Of course, spoiler tags will be used, so read on if you feel like doing so.

The inspiration for such a topic came about after reading the various discussions on Gundam 00. Since the series is coming to end soon, I am curious as to what everyone thinks with regards to the relationship between Saji Crossroad and Louise Halevy. Do you think they will have a happy ending or will they end up as another pair of tragic anime couple?
As much as I hope for the former, the history of Gundam and mecha titles says otherwise, where most of the deranged characters tend to be killed off.

Moving back to the main topic, are there any other tragic anime couples whom you believe deserves better?

From Code Geass:
Spoiler:
Suzaku and Euphie. If not for the accidental geass-ing of Euphie and her subsequent genocide actions, the world could have been a more peaceful place, especially if her plans for a Specially Administrated Zone were to be implemented.


From Gundam Seed Destiny:
Spoiler:
Shinn is definitely not one of my favourite characters in the anime world, but his separation from Stella, due to the latter's death, can be considered tragic, made even more memorable by the beautiful insert song. Then again, Stella's death could be a reprieve for her painful existence

Very interesting topic to bring up. Now, let me dredge up some painful anime memories and try not to cry... >.>

Actually, now that I think about it, the only one I can think of off the top of my head is Rosette and Chrono from Chrono Crusade. :?


Never saw the anime though, just the manga.

About Gundam 00 - I think they'll have a happy ending. I don't like that couple but all this buildup (prefer to call it wasted screentime) would be in vain if a tragedy awaited them IMO.

My choices (sticking to anime/acctual tragedies) :

Geass
Spoiler:
Shirley x Lelouch (though you cold probably insert any 'x Lelouch' pairing here since not a single camp was satisfied I think). While it ain't my favorite, I choose it because it was the truly tragic one and a death of an innocent/pure character like Shirley (especially this well portrayed) always hits hard.


Tsukihime
Spoiler:
Arc x Shiki (if someone says there is no Tsukihime anime again, I'm gonna kill him). Whether or not one acknowledges this series as based on the game, the ending still had a big emotional impact.

Gurren Lagann

Simon x Nia // I knew this was comming and yet rooted like crazy for a happy ending for them. Didn't happen ...

I probably would have named Chrno Crusade myself right of the top off my head, after that I really had to think for a while. Only one really came to mind.

Cowboy Bebop.

It really sucked for Spike to see his girl get killed after taking so long to finally meet her again. Poor guy. He probably deserved a better ending.

The only ones I can think of, off the top of my head are...

Elfen Lied

Spoiler:
I know the manga and the anime have huge deviations... IE the anime ended about 1/4 way through the manga... I think lucy/nyu/and the other one, deserved a better ending than the one they had... T__T...


School Days

I know many people prolly wont agree with me but I think Makoto deserved a better ending with kotonoha...

I gotta agree with whats been mentioned for Gundam 00, Gundam SEED Destiny, and Cowboy Bebop.

For myself, wish things had turned out better for:

meh... there was never really anything there. more in the manga though...

if we are gonna go to this anime, then it should have been Rose and Ed. nothing really there either, i just think it'd be an awesome couple :D

I mean right after Kamina and Yoko kiss you think whoa are you serious.I personally could have seen these two as couple if Kamina hadn't died.

This is possibly the only couple I could truly see in CG (that and CCXLelouch,SuzakuXEuphie)and Shirley's death is the only one I've really shed waterfalls to.

Actually the first thing that came to mind for me was Chise and Shuuji from SaiKano, I don't think I need to say exactly what, if you've seen it you know what I mean, if you haven't go see it now.

it's an awful load to carry, it still pains me just by recalling it... :cry:

I really don't have any particular couples that I like, who didn't get together in the end...

I'd just add Darker than Black.
(Hei & Misaki) - they certainly did have a good connection. Or it might as well be (Hei & Amber) - they surely came from way back.

I guess Gungrave is worth mentioning as well. (Brandon & Maria)

Indeed. If Sunrise history tells us one thing, it's that killing one character off from a romantic pairing is practically mandatory. Although I have to say that if they get a bad ending, probably with Louise's death, then that makes everything Saji's done in the entire season rather pointless, and it would be really redundant since we had a similar situation already. I would like them to have a happy end because I like them.

Code Geass

Lelouch x harem and Suzaku x Euphie
The main characters of Geass certainly got shafted in the romance department. One's dead and the other is pretty much isolated from having contact with almost everybody. Milly wouldn't admit her feelings, CC is still immortal, Kallen went into lover's-suicide there towards the end, and Shirley was nearly killed 5 times over before her actual death.

well this is what I think on my head...

Chrno Crusade

In anime version they die together while watching the sunset...
In manga version Rosette is end up dead too and Chrno's fate is unknown...at least the last page in manga shows they meet each other again...


Gurren Lagann

I just remembered one of my favorite Clamp series...

just a thought that came to mind, I have yet to see a gundam series wherein a romantic couple dies together.

The closest would have been Shiro & Aina from 8th MS Team, which is in fact one of my favorite couples. I loved how it ended in ep11 but they had to ruin it with "The Last Resort" crap.

Maybe I'd see it happen in MSG00. "Why not kill the two lovebirds instead if you're going to kill one anyway?" (a question that has always lingered on my mind)

yes those came to mind next, but these suddenly came to mind when I was thinking about SaiKano,

Yuichi and Rika

Romeo × Juliet
Obvious who I am referring too, despite the fact that this anime adaptation ends differently than the original work, which is as tragic of a romance as you can get, (according to most literature fans)
