As for the Apocalypse Now/Heart of Darkness reference, I did say setting and tone, not the psychoanalysis. The psychology in there is far deeper than Black Lagoon, but from what I've seen in anime, Black Lagoon does hit the psychoanalysis pretty hard, similar to Ergo Proxy and Texhnolyze but more realistic than the two mentioned.
I didn't think BL even went that far. Wasn't much to think and analyze about really except for the twin killers arc.
