Yes sadly i've seen this case a lot, being that I am not of the japanese race nor have i ever been i presume that boys often look like girls from their hair styles, Caucasians do it all the time. not to slander a race but its just their style, i guess.

I going to throw my opinion in this discussion, and say that she is a boyish-looking tomboy; not a boy. My supporting reasons to this is in one episode where the boy with the blue mech., told the tomboy off about missions or something. After that, she becomes all emo and restless. Also there was a beach episode where both the good guys and bad guys went to the same beach, and as I recall, the tomboy was wear a bikini....for tomboys.
