In my opinion though people cosplay because if they wear the same clothes as the character, they feel as if they are the character, and pretty much like in a manga I've read, it turns them into those characters
though I don't cosplay myself
Having a picture taken with a cosplayer is really fun
(Makes me feel the anime character just came into life ^-^)
And I'm pretty sure the cosplayer is happy as well because he/she is being treated like a celebrity
(Popular Anime characters are celebrity in cons right?)

I dont think its a matter of what others think about them, cosplaying should be something you do because you want to look like a anime hero you like and because you have fun dressing up.

There is no one way to answer why people cosplay. But here is my interpretation of some possibilities.1)
It's really a psychological question actually, when some people dress up of do something as simple as putting on a mask, he can feel as an anonymous person or take up a completely different personality. Because of this psychological effect, people can detach themselves from their ordinary boring lives if just for a moment to try to harness the glory of being their idol or just someone else.

Other humans are funny, maybe I'll dress up to see how they'll react, lolol.
To kind of add on to the psychological aspect.
It's also an outlet in which you can live out a fantasy of being a character you admire, as an homage to him/her and being able to walk in their shoes even for a short time.
Most of which (Especially otaku majoring in Theatre/Drama), will detach themselves and get into character, under the belief that anywhere can be a stage.
