That being said, one issue I did not bring up previously was the distinction between books and subscriptions. What led to this distinction?
I think the simplest way to explain this is to compare magazines to a cable TV subscription and books to DVDs. You pay a monthly, relatively small price for access to a large number of channels and shows, and if you like a certain series you buy the box set with bonus content and what have you.
We are thinking about ways to incorporate the books into the subscription—in some capacity—but the immediate focus is on adding more content to the subscription without relying on the books.

I do not understand why a unique paywall is given to books and is excluded from subscribers that do not wish to pay extra for such content.
The main purpose of the magazines is, no pun intended, exposure. Our situation is very similar to the one in Japan, where buying these two magazines on a monthly basis would cost you about the same as buying a single book. You get 40+ artists each month in the magazines, and they introduce you to new names (seven this month). Books are different, in that you support an individual artist by buying his or her book.
Going back to the previous metaphor, you can't buy a subscription for only vampire themed TV shows, but you can buy the True Blood box set.

As a subscriber, I feel slightly...what's the word...ripped off? excluded? unrewarded for my support?
I don't know if you feel this way, but I believe many of those who think the current subscription price is outrageous do that because they lack a point of reference. All they can compare it to is free, which obviously only is the case because of piracy. I've mentioned this before, but when you compare the price of these magazines in Japan, we're practically charging you nothing extra for the localization and the access to uncensored art. We're not offering a $5 product and adding the rest to cover production costs; we're localize and offer it for the same retail price as the original product.
I hope this answered your questions to some degree. I do want to stress that when you take into account what these products actually cost, it becomes hard to argue that it's a rip-off. And that goes for the subscription in its current form. We're right now actively working on the next big thing which—assuming it works out—will add considerable value to the subscription service.
