All tagging (of which I did A LOT post-semester) was lost too.
So that's a lot of wasted effort, too...
That's the way the cookie crumbles.
But the thing is, it shouldn't have to. There's a sense of acknowledgement that has to be given to the people who really put in time and effort to keep this site going (frankly, they are *more* important than the site system itself ~ without their contributions, the site would be lifeless -- a huge part of it's popularity / growth has to be attributed to their involvement), and it's wise not to take them for granted. Especially when we're talking about real contributor's as well ~ those who put in hard work to tag / upload content / make and preserve engaging conversation.
It was a month, nothing of real value was lost and if a user is discouraged to this extent because of a simple data loss then they should stay off the internet.
Except that is not the attitude that webmasters who care about their site should have. Time was lost, effort was lost, content was lost, and enthusiasm by a *lot* of people to keep contributing was lost. These things matter very much. I'm obviously not saying the world is going to end ~ people are going to keep contributing, but a lot of us, are not feeling very enthusiastic atm by what has happened.
Personally in a few weeks I'm sure I will feel fine to put quality posts in again, but I can't help but think I will be a lot more cautious towards the possibility that one day, a huge chunk of posts may be gone again (and this may likely have an effect on my posting frequency). Compound that if others feel the same way about other aspects of the site (posting content / tagging, etc), and you can start seeing how providing a bit of peace of mind to the community goes a long way.
Let's try to remember what's important, the site is up, theses data loses don't happen often and we have new features that make the site better (in beta testing, you'll see the changes soon).
I am hoping very seriously one of these features / changes has to do with how this site's backups are handled, to help ensure / prevent these types of rollbacks from happening again (at least over a crazy period ~ a month is *too* much).
