Actually, the artist himself asked for it to be taken down, and the threats were directed to the people objecting the cover, not to the publishers.

Is it censorship if the artist himself says to take it down, whatever the reason?

Well, "feminazis" may be whiny, obstructive and demanding but they're not stopping you from joining the industry or doing what you want to do. The Batgirl cover wasn't censorship, just spineless cowering at worse, and hypocrisy.

It was a tame homage but if it means it's gonna get them bad publicity and possibly a loss of sales, so it's no wonder they willingly put it down.

The reason this is such an issue isn't because of a massive overreaction, it's because Batgirl is a different character now. The New 52 is was a pretty giant retcon of previous stories, inculding the one the cover is reffering to, "The Killing Joke," where the Joker crippled Barbara Gorden, Batgirl, (it is implied that he also raped her) to prove that one bad day is all it takes to turn someone insane. Batgirl in the New 52 is a kid friendly character designed to interest young girls in comic books. The cover depicts her in a way that damages the image DC had set up for her, that's why there was outrage, that's why the author redacted the cover.
