In The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro, Stevens, a British butler, comes to realize what has been ailing him throughout the entire book. At the start of the book, Kazuo writes that Stevens acknowledges responsibility for small errors in fulfilling his duties (5). An example of one of these errors is given later in the book where an unpolished piece of silverware somehow made it to Mr. Farraday's breakfast table. The error was corrected almost instantly, but to Stevens this was something that could have been easily avoided. He finally slows down and takes a day off from everything, including traveling, and is sitting on a bench awaiting lights to be turned on at a pier in Weymouth. There another aged gentlemen sits beside him and starts to talk to Stevens. Stevens talks of his entire time as a butler, and then starts talking of his new employment and his current situation: Kazuo reports that Stevens asserts "Goodness knows, I've tried and tried, but it's no use. I've given what I had to give. I gave it all to Lord Darlington" (243). Stevens, as far as is known, had served Lord Darlington since the Treaty of Versailles to the end of World War II, at least twenty five years, and so he had very little left to give the new owner of Darlington Hall, Mr. Farraday. Stevens does resolve to start practicing bantering though in hopes to fulfill one of the unofficial duties he felt he had undertaken.
