The year is 3401 A.D. Some years (I would have to estimate about 20) have passed since I was taken into suspended animation by an entity appearing human, yet behaves distinctively alien. My name? Gordon Freeman. I was involved in a freak accident at Black Mesa which is now known as the Resonance Cascade incident and Black Mesa got infested with strange creatures from Xen. Along my adventure I encountered a strange being numerous times but it wasn't until I destroyed the cause of the infestation (while being hindered by the pricks at the military in a failed coverup attempt) that he abducted me, gave me the illusion of free choice and put me in suspended animation. He speaks in a manner almost... unpredictable, as he has the tendancy to pause in the middle of sentences and I sense a hint of fear whenever he mentions his... well what he calls his "employers". I have yet to speak back to him and just go along with what he has planned for me, for my life is in his hands and I fear saying the wrong thing could anger him.
Since I got taken into suspended animation by this strange being, the world has been taken over by a hostile race known as the Combine. The "G-man", as I've taken to calling him, dumped me off on a train in a run-down district. I met up with Barney, a woman named Alyx who claims that I know her father Eli (so he probably won't mind if I copulated with her. It has been roughly 20 years after all), and Dr Kleiner who looks just like every other scientist at Black Mesa before the Resonance Casscade incident so he could have been anyone. I'm assuming he's the last one alive for the others likely became Head-crab zombies. Serves them right for not letting me have my free microwave meal. Do you know how difficult it is to stay alive when your stomach's screaming for food the entire time? I almost went cannibal until I found a vending machine.
My mission now is to take down the Citadel - Breen's headquarters. This is going to be a suicide mission unless the G-man has other plans for me. I've also noticed (rather obvious) "cryptic" hints that Eli and Breen know of the existence of the G-man, but they failed to go into detail about their relationship with him. I'll have to keep an eye out.
That's totally wrong because Gordon Freeman was only sent 20 years into the future where Eli and Kleiner are still alive and Alyx has grown up. And that was in before 2010, so we can assume in 3401 that the world would have been destroyed due to the fighting done between the Combine and the human resistance.
