As a kid I could never explain why, but now I think I can.
In abstract art: Mouths, noses, limbs, and eyes are most effective for making a piece have alien yet familiar aspects.
I find mouths [size=10](specifically smiles)[/h], and eyes [size=10](specifically a single, massive one)[/h] to very effective in art - And I absolutely love art.
