Yeah, after some more thought I too realized my solution has some flaws - the fact that one girl died doesn't change a thing for the one half being boys.
Actually, it does.
'half of them', (Which could refer to the children including their mother.) are boys.

btw when i was told this riddle i never got it and wasn't really happy with the awnser but it makes sense when u think about it

at least 4 or more are boys, that would make "at least" the half are boys, but there's also the possibility her children all being girls or boys, if all boys, half are boys, if all girls, half of nothing is the same as the other half of nothing.
