Didn't watch Log Horizon.
It's Sword Art Online without the consistency or the interesting world.
Lol, SAO is way more inconsistent *cough*willpower*cough*
Watch episode 11 to 15, that's where Touno Mamare starts explaining the world of Elder Tale.

But it
does have deus ex machina skills that come the fuck out of nowhere and solve every issue.
Nope, the author himself has posted all the skills and abilities as references.

The North American counterpart for a Samurai is

Add, in the Europe Server they're
Highlanders
America wouldn't have one since our establishment was far after gun powder became more valuable than swords. Maybe some sort of warrior from the native Americans.
And wouldn't the European equivalent to a Samurai be a Knight?
Well Pirates is the official Class from the Light Novel, and I don't think that they're aiming for accuracy, but more of what is more notable.
I think a Knight is too "general" of a name, because there's also the "Guardian" class, which is very Knight-like in every sense.
The Samurai Class (Pirate/Highlander) is the games major DPS Class for weapon based class. While the Guardian is the Main Tanker and has more defensive skills, which more people have suggested Paladin or Templar Knight as a Localized Class.
