...I think I need to cut on graphical descriptions of how you kill Fort-class BETA with fletchettes artillery round, or else I will never finish this Muv Luv fanfic. But man, is it fun!

Wouldn't burn as well, and missiles are considered an impractical form of warfare unless you are very close, or operating under absolutely ideal tactical conditions.
Plus, it was a vanguard team, so missiles would be too heavy for some going straight to the front.
Yeah, but the trick would actually be delivering the bomb on target.
Bombers don't work, since Laser-class BETA have near 100% accuracy and enormous range, so most ranged weapons are intended to draw Laser's attention from ground-based forces. Cruise missiles don't work for same reason. Hand-held bazookas could work, except you have the possibility of blowing yourself up just as well.
It's a coastal landing, or rather, an attempt of establishing one.
Most TSFs (as I envision it anyway, actual Muv Luv doesn't specify it) carry either explosive fragmentation shells, or tungsten-tipped discarding sabot rounds. Some units carry HEAT rounds, though usually in fewer numbers. Most TSFs carry less than a dozen shells of 120mm caliber, opposed to over thousand 36mm depleted uranium rounds.
The idea was also that the commander wanted to take out the BETA is one-two shots rather than waste precious ammunition. Fort-class BETA are as big as a flat block, so you'd need a lot of ammunition to take it down conventionally.
