I'm using a simple example for this. Imagine Zanchan ordering food at a local restaurant. The options for beverages are coffee, juice, and soda. The instant before Zanchan decides what to drink is labeled point 1 in time plane 1. Zanchan in this time plane orders coffee. What Zanchan doesn't realize is that the coffee will make him get sick several hours later at point 2 in time plane 1.

At point 2 Zanchan decides to travel back in time to point 0 in time plane 1. Point 0 is before Zanchan entered the restaurant. At point 0 the Zanchan that came back in time swaps out the coffee beans at the restaurant with different ones that will will not cause illness. This change in events leads to a divergence of events when point 1 happens. There is the side where Zanchan gets sick and the side where Zanchan does not. As a result of the divergence a new time plane is made and a point 2 in time plane 2 where Zanchan is healthy exists. The Zanchan from time plane 1 returns to a few seconds after point 2 in time plane 1 where he continues to be sick due to coffee. Zanchan in time plane 1 created the divergence of time plane 1 so that Zanchan in time plane 2 remains healthy.

From the perspective of Zanchan at point 2 in time plane 1, the events went "ordered coffee ---> got sick", meanwhile from the perspective of Zanchan at point 2 in time plane 2 the events were "ordered coffee ---> remained healthy". From point 2 in both time planes, neither past is "wrong" or "right". There is simply two pasts, one for each time plane. Like this there can never be a hollywood time paradox as any paradoxical events create a new time plane. In this case a paradox would happen the instant the coffee was switched if multiple planes of time were not allowed to exist.

If you want you could include the time travelling events in a storyline. In time plane 1 it would look like
Point 0: Nothing special happens.
Point 1: Zanchan orders coffee
Point 2: Zanchan is sick and decides to time travel

In time plane 2
Point 0: Zanchan from time plane 1 arrives and swaps coffee beans
Point 1: Zanchan from time plane 2 orders coffee
Point 2: Zanchan from time plane 2 remains healthy.

In a way Zanchan from time plane 1 has control over time plane 2 because he was the cause of the divergence. So you can argue people at point 2 can exert their influence into the past to create a desirable future. However this future will not be one the people who create it can enjoy without moving to another time plane. Naturally if Zanchan was to meet himself from the future in a different time plane that would also cause a divergence. Of course this applies to more than just restaurant beverages. Every decision made in the present may be influenced by people from the future. Time travellers will also not make themselves known to the public either as it could harm any future they seek to create.
