MAL also let you see what your friends are watching which I use a lot.. *stalking for good anime* Other than that MAL has a desktop updater which can update itself when you watch anime downloaded. you don't need to go to the website for updating~ Also often I find that MAL has more "info" then other listing sites. Like director and theme song performer etc. and I like to add music videos and weird specials which I also often only find on MAL. I know that when viewing somebody's profile on MAL, it says something about how compatible you two might be based on your tastes and everything. I think that's pretty neat. ^-^
A-P has a sort of "follower" system set up and it lets you see what the people you're following have recently added if you go to "Feed" from your account. I don't know how detailed it is in comparison, but it'll say stuff like "MrTripStack is watching Tokyo Ghoul anime at 10 of ? episodes" or when you rate something or add something to your other lists. Of course, I don't use that feature much myself. I'm part of a sort of "Welcoming Committee" over on A-P and because of that, at least 60-70% of my feed is "______ added a profile comment for ______".
I know that Anime-Planet also recently added the ability to watch anime directly from their site and you can choose to have your list updated automatically when you watch anime through there, but that doesn't really interest me much. I actually do enjoy having A-P opened on the side and just mark my episodes as I go.
It all comes down to personal tastes though and it's nice to have several options out there. I'm sure I'll probably end up making a MAL account someday. Even if I don't keep it updated, I can use it for the forums, since MAL seems much more active than A-P overall.
