Any ideas for becoming a better writer? (That includes poems)
This is coming from my personal experience as a writer as well, the best thing you can do to build your skills is write copious amounts, just if you have free time try and write something. I've been doing it in 500 word blurbs or single scene chunks when I have a chance, at work, during break, during lunch, between classes. The next best thing is find what you want to write about, the genre, and read tons of it. It helps build up an idea of whats been done and whats original, as well as spawn new ideas.
As far as my own trio, it would have to be these:
1. A novelist (writer that writes books specifically)
2. Chemist (mixing chemicals and making booms always entertained me)
3. Survivor of the zombie apocalypse (because I'd hate to have wasted my time researching this stuff)
