Where's the love? Where's the passion?

For all their bishounen angst, SEED doesn't have anything on classic Gundam. For one, the choreography sucks, and once you realize they're flynning instead trying to smash their opponent it just looses all the momentum.

Remember when Amuro trashed six Rick Doms? That choreography while crudely drawn is still breathtaking. The kid takes the Gundam through its loops, making the huge mech dance in space and shoot with a grace I've yet to see animated.

If epic fight where both combatants stand their ground is what you want, then I think the showdown at Jabro in the Second Gundam movie is the best you could get. In the last episode the battle was simply too brutal for fancy moves and Tomino had to strip them of their mobile suit to successfully portray their argument without killing everything in sight.

How about some non-gundam stuff?

Ever heard of VOTOMS? How about Chirico Cuvie's rough but elegant handling of his very rough but potent Scope Dog? The kind I speak about when he finally faces down Ypsillon, or even better the part where he undergoes the Red Shoulder admission trial in "Roots of Ambition".

How about the choreography in Bubblegum Crisis? That OVA still has some of the best drawn action scenes with tight camera work that just draws you in.

Then of course you have the highly acclaimed and already mentioned fights from Macross Pluss that has yet to be bested ever since.

The recent shows you write about are reasonable well animated and might even look really pretty (like 00) thanks to the computerwork that goes into anime nowadays, but I just can't get into it. It lacks artistic merit. Most of the time the camera work is really sloppy, and with the fancy CG assistance and mad glints of CG-shading the animators can't be arsed to actually make the mech act and move on-screen. That's why you were all so awed by the final fight in Gundam 00 for once they decided to do that.

But budgetary constraints shouldn't be such an obstacle.

One of my oldie, but goldie favorite OVAs, Detonator Orgun is good example. Everything in that piece is low budget. Hey, even the plot and characterization is so old-fashioned that you feel embarrassed for it. Still with some clever camera work and the willingness to use cheap camera and lighting effects to its best they transformed that anime into one of the most kinetic viewing experiences I'd ever seen. Top it off with some solid designs, Susumu Hirasawa's music and you have a solid piece that while very old-fashioned was still a piece that advanced animation.

I don't beleive that any of the fights in SEED Destiny is greatly epic or memorable because its ending battle isn't the most epic thing in the world.

For lulz indeed, it didn't even contain any mecha.

Almost every single EVA battle in the Rebuild movies where the Angel wasn't just a giant redshirt to introduce a new character. I mean, they don't always contain any actual fighting, but they're so epic it makes up for it.

I beg to differ. Every time Luna came on screen was an awesome fight until the series started to go south on us. Seriously, how many characters can say they went six or seven rounds against a Gundam in a bog-standard Zaku and lived to see the end of the series? Coordinator powers or no, that's pretty goddamn impressive.
