Burned Out

Has anyone ever felt like they were burned out? As in even the minor daily errands that need to be done felt like a total hassle, school work just seems unimportant and your grades plummet, etc.

I'm failing one of my classes, and will end up failing the other one as well - I've never failed a class before, ever - not even in high school.

I stopped volunteering for a bit to leave a little extra space in my schedule until I get back to how I normally feel. I also am planning on taking a semester off of school, there's no sense in going while I feel like this and allowing it to affect my GPA.

What have any of you done to get out of this rut?

It'd be nice if I was home and could have my mom straighten me out, she doesn't put up with any bullshit.

Yea, he does. The other day he did some cleaning while I was at work, which was really nice. Usually I keep up with the housework since he's able to pay for more of the bills than I am.

He's supportive, but there's only so much he can do ;p in the end it's my own responsibility

I've had a similar experience as a student, about five and a half years ago.
I was getting my master's, working at the hospital, and moonlighting in PBX administration on the side - one job for my own upkeep, the other to amass an education fund for my little brother.
Then I had the grand idea of taking another job on the side, moonlighting (to evade the tax) ads a (go ahead and laugh) garbage sorter for a recycling firm, on the pretext of getting my brother's college money together more quickly.

Long story short, I was burning out, and fast. Didn't sleep anymore at night, didn't eat for days in a row, walked around like a dad-blanging ghost. So, I can absolutely relate.

As for what I did to get out of it. To put it bluntly, my girl-friend set my head straight (one of the two times we've quarrelled in all these years) in a very, uh, stern and unwavering manner.
I quit two of the jobs and just did my college and the hospital-work on the side. I learned to look after myself and to find ways of dealing with stress in an efficient manner. And, perhaps the hardest part, I learned to accept assistance when offered.

from what u said it may be 2 things:

1) ure depressed & u may not know about it

2) i don't recall da name right now but it has to do with a mind thing that happens very rare, the only thing u need to do is get a nyce i dunno 3 days of relaxation and stuff, cus ure brain is full of work/study stress, it happened da same to me only i didn't eat, couldn't concentrate and had insomnia for like 2 weeks before i got some special meds, believe me u don't wanna end up by just sleepin like 2/3 hours a day D:

I always feel like that, but then again I am extremely lazy.

When you're feeling burned out I find it's helpful to start a new project. Something interesting that you actively want to work on. You reserve working on this project in your free time, that can help motivate you to go through the regular things like chores, work, or school. Sort of a, "I have been responsible, now I can work on what I really want to do."
A couple of things that I have on my platter are:
- writing a novel
- making and maintaining a website
- learning to draw better
- cooking new and interesting things

It may be misplaced enthusiasm, but when you're in a rut it's better than nothing.

The whole reason I took a break from school... Too much of it will do that to you.

If you're honestly feeling so horrible, taking a break and relaxing for some of the holiday season should help tons.

Yeah, I'm feeling a little like that right now. For about a month, I've been doing these... tests every weekend. It might not seem much, but they're really strenuous, take the whole day and the chairs are quite unconfortable. Also, they pour gasouline on ya.

What I did to get out of this? Well, not much, just got some rest, sleeping does wonders. 12 straight hours ought do it...

gah!! 5 times a week...

CALCULUS sucks.. (i'm definitely goin' to fail this one), part time job, violin trainings... i've been feeling dragged lately because of those and other unneeded tasks...

It's a good thing i have a 4.5gb of stress reliever in my HD...

Haha, I think one reason she's burned out is too many projects.

Sometimes a change of scenery is nice, although I found that with one of my old jobs, I'd go on vacation and then come back and just feel stressed out again right away. I eventually left that job because it was causing too much anxiety. I think you have to do something that genuinely changes your everyday routine to really feel like things are any different.

No, I agree with the project idea; focused effort in a relaxed environment seems like more of a solution than e.g. a holiday, where you'd just come back to the problem. Certainly working on a website has helped me when I've been down. And of course, exercise, good diet and plenty of sleep helps; I seem to remember that B vitamin deficiencies can screw you over in this area.

The one thing that helps me through tough times are hobbies. I guess it falls under what people say for new projects so let this jsut be a supportive topic for that.

My advice on getting hobbies is to get one where you become active. That excludes; anime, tv, movies, and reading.

Had a time last year during the holiday season where I working 2 jobs (picked up a quick one that lasted for 2 days so 3 really) along with my fam to help save my sis from losing her house back in the DR. The one thing that really eased my mind was gunpla. Ive always wanted to start a model so I did and any time I got to myself at home I focused on them. Putting what detail I could into them with no prior experience was really nice. Getting a limb done then painting em (with only markers) was the highlight of my day.

I didn't put as much time as I wanted to into doign research on 'techniques', just enjoyed the simple pleasures it brought me doing it on my own. Dunno if it'll help you but it sure helped me living through the hell toys'r'us is at christmas time.

Yeah, I've definitely felt burned out before. I've always felt that reading books was especially good for getting out of that state though any hobby will do.


Heh. Back in the day, I would think that, too.

I understand the feeling of wanting to do something but just feeling a general malaise to it. Like you're burnout of the effort or you just can't find inspiration. Usually I have to wait till the next spark of inspiration comes by to kick my ass into starting productivity again. Sorry Ziggy but stick with it and I hope your burnout feeling goes away soon.
