China Finally Blocks All Porn

It's nothing new. As Jake mentioned before, just a few months ago China was warning Google that they must do more to block the porn. It seems that now they are taking matters into their own hands.





The situation looks pretty dire. China is potentially wiping out porn - and - any other sites they don't want you to see.

From what I can see, the only way out of this now is a complete reinstallation, which a lot of people are uncomfortable with (don't think this isn't true - see how many people still use IE?).

The only good thing is that this might help boost Mac sales...

Sucks to be them. Good thing I live in the US, otherwise I would have to worry about such things as "Pre-installed porn blocker"

The chinese are smart. Pretty soon they'll be all types of cracks to get around the system.

What about all the computers that are custom built? I for one had mine put together piece by piece and installed my own things on it.

Nothing can really be contained on the internet.

I can see overbearing religeous parents importing chinease computers to keep thier kids away from porn :lol:

It's not impossible for them to put it straight into Windows installation DVDs. Now that is a very nasty thought, since the Government is pretty powerful in China.

This will totally make way for Linux. But you're right - there are bound to be cracks. I'm a Chinese, I would know. :)

I totally agree. However the government has direct control over the PLA, which according to Wikipedia is the biggest active army in the World. When one party reigns in a dictatorship with an army of 3 million troops, overthrowing them is pretty much impossible. Remember than June 4th Event? They are not afraid to kill all the rebels. Doesn't matter if it's in Beijing. Doesn't matter if they're students.

How ironic, the army's name being "People's Liberation Army".

And I don't believe they will do anything about that coz, as stated in the post above, people don't want another July 4th after they've seen that army is capable to shoot on civilians.
It's just the matter of time before they shut internet completely for all except Chinese domains.

That snippet tells us plenty little about how this is actually being done, but:
If you absolutely want to censor the net with a desktop app solution, there's a very easy way:
You don't need to put it on the windows setup disk, or anything.
You can simply require that the application be running in order to be granted connectivity and make it the user's problem to ensure that the application is running.
Then they can do whatever they want with their PC, use whatever OS they want, re-install, custom-build, whatever - at the end of the day, the application is there and running, or no net for you.


I for one welcome our new overlords; developments concerning internet in china have consistently acted as an augur of what politicians will come up with next in the west.

I guess this also include hentai right...? don't they know these are essential to a man's well being...? that will never happen to my country, never...

And who says China isn't still a totalitarianistic communist government? This more recent news just says to me that China's government needs a serious makeover, and if they were doing things more smart, they'd be at the top of the world in no time.

But anyway, it will only affect internet rentals and/or computer vendors. Consumers, well, after having THAT software, just download a new copy of Windows XP from torrents, burn it to a disk, format the PC, and reinstall. Having an inside program to block porn and the Dalai Lama's blog won't be any problem for the average Chinese computer owner. It's like a savvy 15-year old deinstalling his mommy's tracking software.

Are you stating that you believe that this trend will float it's way over to the West? I don't think the United States would put up with that well. It breaks our constitutional rights. I wouldn't care if it was over pornography, I would protest along with a lot of other very angry people.

If Obama wants to stay in office long he'd be smart not to do it as well.

And as much as I hate being right in this case - laws like HADOPI and LOPPSI* in France; or MTI** in Britain; the call for internet censoring in Germany to be extended beyond child porn to gambling and "political extremism"; and so forth point exactly in that direction. You know what's funny? At the last preparatory meeting for this autumn's Internet Governance Forum (IGF), China responded to censorship allegations from western countries by pointing to the increasingly widespread filtering and tapping in the west. And what do you know, an agreement was reached to the tune of the UN "not condemning" internet filtering any longer.
