(combined quotes are getting way too long, starting new one)
Yeah, sure, I'd welcome your advice. I mean, I don't make a ton of money every month with my current fresh-out-of-college job and its pitiful spending money after all my expenses take practically all of it, so I can't always indulge, but if one really catches my eye, I'd save up for it, no problem. It seems like it would be a genuinely practical investment, given the effect it has on how well I can wake up if I get an emergency call that I have to immediately get up and respond to at 6 AM--the nature of my job is basically emergency response work when it comes to business network infrastructures along with consulting work, so it's almost impossible for me to keep a consistent sleep schedule, considering my tendency toward restless sleep.
I can imagine myself adding this as what would be my most expensive but satisfying hobby, so, yeah, helpful tips would be sincerely appreciated.
I guess the most important thing to consider is how erotic/NSFW you're willing to go. The majority of circle covers (think like doujinshi circles, but for dakimakura covers) tend to be on the NSFW side, at varying levels of explicitness. Unfortunately, if you want a vanilla case without any nudity/fan service, there aren't many options. But if you don't mind that, or even prefer it, then you have thousands of options available to you.
Very few people in this thread have purchased a cover similar to the one you have; while it is an officially licensed cover and not a bootleg as was suggested, we pretty much focus on the Japanese scene entirely. So you can pretty much safely assume that whatever we're discussing in here is relevant to the Japanese industry.
There are three basic categories when it comes to covers in the industry:
1. Company covers - These are the types of covers that are officially licensed in Japan, featuring art from anime/video game properties. As they're officially licensed, unless the source material is an eroge or some such, you're usually going to get ecchi at best. The exception to this is "circles" like TakumiMakura that create original characters and thus can do whatever they like with the them. For the broad sake of definition, a "company" cover is any cover you can purchase on a site like AmiAmi or Hobby Search. They've improved over the last year or two (largely thanks to Takumi Makura and some of the Lilith/eroge covers), but in general you can expect the quality to be a bit less than that of a circle cover, which I'll cover next. As the art is official, it usually is done by the artists that actually worked on the series, so this is a big plus if you like your art to stay close to the characters in their property... but as you mentioned you're not really big into anime, I don't think this will necessarily be a sticking point for you. On one last note, they tend to be a bit cheaper than circle cover and you can usually order them without much hassle, as AmiAmi/Hobby Search both ship internationally.
2. Circle covers - I'd say the majority of what you'll see in this thread is regarding circle covers. If you've ever browsed the Fakku front page, you know what doujinshi are; basically fan art/stories. Dakimakura covers aren't really any different. Circles draw covers based on their favorite characters and sell them. Technically isn't legal, but it's accepted in Japan. The great thing about these covers is that there are probably hundreds of different circles, each with their own unique style. If you find a particular artist/circle you like, you can follow their works as they span across different characters/series. It obviously varies depending on the circle, but the artists usually put a lot of love into their creations and the quality is oftentimes much better than what you can expect from a mass produced company cover. There are a few fairly big downsides to circle covers, though: they're usually a bit more expensive, and on top of that, very few circles are willing to deal with international customers. That can be worked around with a proxy, which I can explain a bit later if you find something you like.
3. Bootlegs - This one should be fairly obvious. They basically just rip shit from company and circle covers alike and try to pass off the work as their own. The reason Zengar probably assumed your cover was a bootleg to begin with is because 99% of the stuff you'd find on English sites such as eBay are bootlegs. They're very prominent in the very small English based community and even then they're pretty common on Japanese sites, as well. If you really get into this hobby, you'll learn how to spot them pretty easily, but the easiest thing to look for is the material the item is made of; if the cover is made of a material called "peachskin" it's almost guaranteed to be a bootleg.
Now that you have a basic rundown of the different covers available, it's time to introduce you to the blog. It's basically a site that lists all of the upcoming covers, where they'll be sold, how much they'll cost, what material they're made of, and so on. It's an incredibly useful tool, either for searching for old covers/characters (via the search bar in the top right) or just browsing to see what's coming out. Unfortunately, it's in Japanese and can be a bit tough to navigate at first, but with a bit of practice and time, it honestly isn't hard to figure out. I'd highly recommend using Google Chrome for the autotranslate feature it has.

I mentioned a proxy before for buying circle covers, but luckily some of the very best circles are willing to deal with international customers. If you want to check them out, you can view a post I made a few weeks ago on the subject (all sites are NSFW):

If there are any particular characters you have a fondness for, I'd be happy to look around for you and see what might be available. Or if you have any other questions feel free to either PM me or ask a question here.
This hobby is definitely expensive if you get into it; it's also incredibly addictive. But it's a whole lot of fun and I wouldn't have it any other way (well it would be nice if the covers were cheaper :3.)
