Does arguing with assholes piss you off?

Has anybody said something illogical to you during an argument?
Did you want to break their necks for it?
Did you at least want to hit them with something?

This thread is about the type of of logical fallacy that pisses you off the most when used against you in an argument. If you know your fallacies, then I bet you can spot when someone is being a douchebag and committing one.



I fucking hate it when someone uses a strawman argument against me. Let's say you're in a heated argument and you believe in A, then the motherfucker says, "so you believe in B and C?" then starts refuting it even though it's not what you were talking about to begin with. I don't tolerate that shit. Especially because I have to keep restating my position until they get it right.

This happened during an argument with my cousin and it turned into a fist fight.

Yeah, I get pissed but it doesn't bother me too much cause it helps me with my argument if I'm arguing around other people. People are going to see what the other guy says and say that dude has no fucking clue what he/she's talking about.

But then of course a lot of people misunderstand that if A + B = D and A + C = D, then it must be B = C. People mistake this argument for something like you said:

I'd like to think that I wouldn't argue with assholes, but if I've already defined them in my head as such, then it's kind of a lost cause. I'd say the logical fallacy that irritates me the most is the "fallacy of necessity", which is when people reach a conclusion based on multiple, unrelated, premises.

What I can't stand is people who won't admit they're wrong, even if they have nothing to support themselves, and will scream at you until you give up and walk away. Then a week later those same people will show up and scream about how they were wrong and blame you for not warning them.

What irritates me most are appeals to emotion and diversion - when someone ignores your argument and focuses on something completely besides the point.
Right behind that comes dogmatism. I've gotten into scholarly debates where the hon. member opposite suddenly went "oh, scientific rigor does not apply to me, because it contradicts leninist dialectics". Thaaaanks. Or when someone says "no matter how much sense your argument on fruit flies makes, the latest quarterly business report from enron says otherwise", alluding to an authority that has no say in the matter.
That makes me just throw my hands to the ceiling and give up on the argument and the person in question, forever.

I generally don't argue with assholes.

People like this can only be funny or tolerable if they are white and racist because their arugements are just beyond absurd.

Wait till you get the first job where arguing in staff meetings makes the future of your project/department/... depend on it.

I've always been annoyed by what I like to call "shock and awe" debate tactics, usually something like a healthy combination of ad hominem, slipperly slope, straw man, and overly dramatic lingual flourishes. Though it's not so much annoying when people do it to me, more that it seems surprisingly effective in some public forums since it makes the user of the tactic seem aggressive and confident. Of course, there is nothing to stop someone willing to investigate from seeing through this, but we often see that in things like political "debates," impressions matter more than substance.

The other thing that I dislike is statistics being cited without the context of methodology.

I hate arguing with others who won't admit that they're wrong even when you're right with all the context and reasoning... and then they won't admit it by not responding. I'm talking online. In real life, I haven't really talked to assholes recently... that was the time in high school with jocks, pricks, and stuck-ups abound. (Even in college, I've met an asshole, but I really don't argue with him.)

I dislike it when people try to support their arguments with false claims and believe that their opinion is fact. There are also those who are completely wrong on a topic or act like a prick just for the sake of being a prick, those are the kind I really can't stand. There are plenty of those types on the internet, and because of their terrible circle logic and such, don't care if you make well thought out rebuttals, and will just respond with some more terrible logic. Most of these people also have god complexes, which just makes them seems stupider.

Edit: The topic is misleading, maybe you should change it to "Does arguing with stupid people piss you off?", because I know plenty of assholes that can present extremely well thought out arguments that are backed up with facts.

one: they still look like idiots in front of people with out me pointing it out
two: it's a waste of my time
three: if they didn't learn all this in school then why should i bother teaching them again
