I say go for it, there's a lot of benefits from going and there's a lot of opportunities as well.
My ex just joined the Marines and is leaving for bootcamp in October, I'm pretty proud of him. He doesn't have a lot of discipline and wasn't really planning on doing anything with his life. You get cost benefits, any additional college you might want paid for, and you get ample respect from people - which you should. Defending the country and putting your life on the line is something that should be recognized.
He just wants to make something out of himself.

You'll die. America loves to play war, and you'll probably be shipped off to some god-forsaken to fight not for your own country, but for some country you've never heard of. You'll get shot for doing something, and it will get infected, and you'll die, full of pain and wishing you hadn't joined the military.
Or something like that. I dunno.
Do they even send firefighters to other countries? Shit, I didn't even know the military had firefighters. What's the difference between being a regular firefighter and being a military firefighter? I guess if you're in the military, you'd be fighting fires in some other country instead of at home. Or fires on a boat or something. There's a reason to not join - if you want to be a firefighter, do it where you live. That way, you'll save the lives of your neighbors and loved ones.
There's this thing now, it's called modern medicine. IF he would get shot, he probably would be thanking anything out there that it only got infected.
He's also talking about joining the Airforce, they don't do the front line shit. If he was joining the marines, like I was talking about my ex, then he'd have to worry about that more.
Also, there's fire all the time in war. Explosions, maybe even fires intentionally started - tank explosions, car explosions, etc. Lots of opportunities for fires.
