Is valentine's day a real holiday?

I've heard several times that it was made up by hallmark. If this is true its extremely aggravating because I hate when people do shit like that just for money, but I did some research and several sources claim its been celebrated since the 16th century in england. If it is made up I suggest we boycott greeting cards.
