Meet and Greet Section.

There are a bunch of you users on the forum who enjoy the meet and greet section quite a bit. I have noticed a trend which has existed for a while now but I have always wondered a few things about said trend. Why do many of you post the same greeting message or a link to a picture which you edited to greet someone. What is your reasoning for doing so? It seems less involved than simply posting "hello thar" because you had to type those words instead of simply copy/paste. Is it for the benefit of new members? Do you believe the image is cool/unique enough that they will benefit from having seen it? I would also like to ask the rest of the user base what they believe would happen if posts in M&G did not count toward post count as it could be a possible link. Don't misunderstand this thread, I am not asking you to stop nor am I going to single anyone out (you already know who you are). I would simply like to understand what goes through your mind as you do it? I do not require any response from anyone, if you don't feel the need to address this thread because you believe you will be targeted; but if someone would be willing to respond with their opinion I would appreciate any insight you can give. This thread was designed for civil debate and if it turns into a flame war against anyone but me I will do what needs to be done, that being said if you have something you wish to say to me feel free to.

Well it's like people who sign their posts, they do it because they can. But in this case these people want +1 postcount. They treat it like Karma in these forums.

Getting their Post count might also be why they do it...

I think it is nice for new users to get a lot of greetings from the community, and the custom images are a nice touch to break up the endless repetition of 'welcome', but posts definitely shouldn't count. Shouldn't need any other motive than to be welcoming or to comment on what they've said.

Then ill go ahead and say something if you dont mind.
First of all, i want to state that im always typing the welcoming messages myself and vary them alot, except of the "Peace,Asa" in the end.
And yes i also post a picture from time to time, if this is problematic, ill stop right away.

And if they post wouldnt count towards the post count ill still greet the new members.

Personally, I think that some form of repetition is required from those who do frequently welcome people in that forum. There's only so many things you can say to someone you don't know, especially when many "Hello" threads contain little to no information of the person. Images are always a good way to fill in what you feel is an insufficiently verbose reply to someone.
I'm sure not many of those with scripted replies have pondered this even nominally, but the results coincide nonetheless.

You sir are correct, I just didnt want this to look too formal but I guess the disclaimer I have to add kinda negates that... moving it.



Also after reading what some of you had to say I would like to ask you: what do you think would happen if post didnt count toward post count in M&G? Would there be less greetings?

Quite possibly. But this is only conjecture.

I don't really have a problem with it specifically asa, I'm more interested in your thought process when you post the same thing multiple times? I believe you do type it out but when it comes off as the same message every time regardless of copy/paste or typed out it's still the same. Are you not concerned the user may feel that your reply is less personal if they see the same exact post in another thread? It's really not a bother, I believe that you are being friendly, I trust that you would continue to do so if it did not increase your post count and I recognize how hard it might be to say something original every time. I guess I just want to know why.

This debate came up a while ago. I don't see the harm, people post in IB all the time regardless of the fact that there's no post count.

They shouldn't be posting for post count anyway, if they have a problem with it, they're greeting the person for the wrong reason.

Perhaps it would remove all the fake copied meet and greet posts as they would not gain from posting it, leaving only the real greetings. I like your position.

I was used to greet my customers at the store always with the same line as well, ( id dont use the same line all the way in here tough) but since its a thread about greeting, and not about discussing someones likings/hobbys, thats why i stick to the basic communication forms and...well...im not a wall of text poster, so i keep my message short and nice. Thats what im thinking :)

true, I guess a greeting probably shouldn't contain too much, it's fairly informal.

so what you're saying is you agree with most of us but think that too few greetings would remain if the post count was removed? You make a solid argument for keeping it. I'm not sure there is a workable solution where we still have a good verity of users that greet new users but remove all the fake greetings.

He was the only one i didnt greet on purpose....People like this i dont like to talk to/ chat with. and i am usually a very kind person...

I have no problem with people making posts like that in Meet and Greet, which we have discussed before.
