Misplaced Trust

As usual, let me start off with an experience of mine: Recently, I helped a soccer teammate of mine to purchase a book from the local bookstore since I have a membership card which entitles me to extra discount. After discount, the book costs around $13. When I passed the book to him yesterday, I noticed that he was going to give me $15 and so I returned him with a change of $2. However, it was only on my way home that I realized I collected only $5 from him. I felt awkward to bring up the topic of money among friends, but I messaged him nonetheless. To my disappointment, he claimed he has paid me in full.

I believe it is partly my fault for not checking the amount of money on the spot. At the same time, I shouldn't have been too trusting of friends whom I am not extremely close to.

To look at things from another viewpoint, could it have been possible that it was a honest mistake on his part, whereby he didn't notice the extra $10 in his wallet or pockets? What are the chances that he will return me the money when we next meet up for soccer (or football)?

Lesson Learned: If a small sum of money can make me see the true colours of a so-called friend, then it is well worth it, provided I don't make the same mistake in future. :eng101:

Getting back on topic, have any of you encountered scenarios or situations in which you were cheated or taken advantage of by "friends"?

Lol I hope I'm saying this right, but back when I was still in high school around my sophmore year I believe, I loaned my friend some cash so he could buy lunch or w/e. Alright so then days went buy and he still never paid me back, I kept asking him but he still insisted that he will pay me back later. It went on for a while, then at some point in time I guess when we were playing some cards he said why don't we gamble so I won't have to pay you back. Well we played a couple hands and he went further into debt to me lol, but he still persisted and I don't know how but somehow he actually was able to win the money so he didn't have to pay me back. Not really the same kind of situation you went through, but I did get the same feeling as if I just got jibbed. :|

Sometimes yes, for example I once gave a pack of cigarettes to someone I considered a friend because he said he'd give 2 packs in return "tomorrow". I never got anything back of course.




People be-friend you only to fuel their own personal goal, it is pretty irritating and frustrating sometimes. Guess it also teaches you a lesson on who to trust and to just be more careful in life.

Minor things over the years I'm sure, but nothing so "life altering" that I can specifically remember anything.

It has happened to me several times. But they were merely small changes to help buy this or that. I did get that feeling though, that they were never going to pay me back. It taught me the lesson.

when lending money, i always take the role of the overly excited creditor who basically: "omg what if you forget to return me and i also forgot to collect!?"

in the end, i NEVER forget. kinda anal i know, but at least my friendships have no chance getting conflicted with money issues

I have an experience like this : Sometime ago, I let my friend borrow my mangas (she's a neat person and a manga collector too, so I trust her) She returns it 3 days later, I just put it on my bag and go after that. However, after I'm home; I'm checking it just to found one volume is missing. Next day I ask her, but she said that she's already return all of it. Of course I'm checking again if I miss that one, to my disappointment those book is really missing.

But then the next day I meet her, she said sorry that she miss that one and return the book immediately.

There's some other minor case of me being cheated by someone, but since it's not really a big case I either already solved or forgotten it. But still, it hurts when you're being cheated by someone you trust.

I have lent money to friends and always got them all back and vice versa, I guess it really depends on the person and such.

Nothing big, just stuff like twenty bucks.

If he truly is your friend then he should already be too ashamed to look you in the eye every time you will meet. But isn't there also a possible chance that he did give the exact amount? Maybe you dropped the missing 10$ somewhere.

Anyway, I too lend my friends money so I know the feeling. Someone still hasn't given me back my 50$ and it has been a year since. What I do now when she asks for money is immediately spend it on something so she would shut up.

Misplaced trusts...huh. Well, I got one that I'm still pissed until now...

It happened in middle school. My locker broke, and I got this lil' 300 with me. I lived in a hostel, with lots of not-so-good guys that would readily steal stuff from people...so I was troubled about keeping the money safely. That was when one of my classmate offered some help...and I agreed. After I bought a new lock...I came to him and claimed the money. He said it was stolen. I told him to replace it...and all of the sudden he accused me of setting him up. Fuck, somehow that damned disciplinary teacher believed in his story...and I was suspended for 2 weeks for "setting up events to falsely accuse and make profit off someone else". Damn.

happened too much in my middle school year.well at that time i'm still naive.

what I've learned over the past few years while living with room mates is to not sweat the small stuff, only discuss the bigger issues because it's the small stuff that drives people apart. When it's a bigger issue both parties will take the problem seriously and try to work out some sort of understanding or compromise; small stuff generally leads to one person telling the other to get over it. In the end you're down 8$, unless you're having financial problems I can't see what the 8$ would be worth getting into possible drama later for; simply refuse to help him in the future when it concerns money and let it go.

well there is this one time my friends and i went to an all you can eat sushi place after we ate one of my friend didnt have enough to pay for it so i paid for him, when i needed some cash i asked if he could pay me back at least a little of what he owed me and he denied the fact that he owes me money

in my case rather than an owing lending money problem, my case was I bring over a "friend" to play games. It was a group play, so he was one of those "extra buddies" to make the game more merrier.

In the next 2 days I got my car stolen by him, because he secretly took my car keys to be duplicated. Good thing that I can find that car just 2 hours after it went missing, and I caught him "red-handed".

was he sent to jail?

Of course lol, and we even found out that he stole a Laptop from his dorm mate too after that.
