Like what you people have mentioned, I am resigned to the fact that I have lost $10. I will definitely be wary of helping said "friend" in future.
10 bucks can be earned back after another few hours of work, but what irks me would be the actions of my "friend". When he needed help with the purchase and discount of the book (supposedly for his girlfriend), his sms and replies would be immediate, requesting that I meet him as soon as possible. When I asked about the money, his reply would definitely take a while to come. I will not rule out the possibility that I am overly sensitive.
Another Lesson Learned: A favour done is a favour forgotten... in some cases. :eng101:
Apparently Sociology has this thing called 'social currency'. Basically the logic is that if a person does their friend a favor they expect one in return. In this case, you lent them money and expected it back, and he failed to meet said expectation. As a result, he has not returned your social currency and you will not be liable to engage in social transactions with him in the future.
