Need help. . .

Soo I have a problem. I need to convert MKV and OGM files. So could somebody upload it or just post how it's called? I really need it :roll:

You might be able to just change the extension on the .mkv file to .ogm I tried it on one of mine and the video still played in VLC no problem.

If that does not work you can give Handbrake a try. I've tried it out a few times, seems like you should just be able to convert any file to whatever you want it to be.

i don't know a thing about ogm, so i won't say anything about it...

but why would you want to convert mkv? that's the best video container out there. unless if you want to play it on ps3 or something...

if it's about it won't play stuff, just use cccp. it can solve almost all video playback problem you'll ever have.

I need to convert MKV and OGM files to AVI, 3gp. From AVI I can convert to almost every file type in the earth. So basically I need AVI. Oh and thnx for everyone who tries to help me :wink:

Think of mkvs and ogms as boxes. Inside these boxes are video, audio, and subtitle tracks. In order to turn these into an avi file, you are going to have to figure out which tracks you want. Obviously you can't have multiple tracks of the same type in an avi file.

For example say your ogm has 1 video track, 2 audio tracks (ex. japanese and english), and multiple subtitle tracks for even more languages. An avi will only have an end product of a video and audio track fused together. I'm not sure exactly how to do this because I haven't had the need to do it but you are going to have to figure out how to seperate these tracks individually and then if you want subtitles, they are going to have to be hardsubbed into the video file.

The only thing even remotely close to this that I have done was take an avi of advent children from before it hit the states, put it on a dvd and added a subtitle track. DVDs are obviously different in that they are mpegs, so I can't really help you. Just do some googling and you may find some programs that will help you.

All I can really say is to make sure that when you do finally figure out how to make the avi is to keep the resolutions, bitrates, etc. the same. If you do it right the end file shouldn't be bigger than the ogm/mkv.

Oooh oooh, totally forgot about this: AllToAVI: http://alltoavi.sourceforge.net/ Made by an otaku specifically for this purpose of turning your MKV and OGM files into AVI's so you can watch them on your iPod, PSP, whatever you may have that cannot read MKV and OGM.

The program may be a little hard to use but you can select what audio tracks and subtitle tracks you want, size of the video, and audio and video codecs.

I've tried alltoavi. And it works!! But converting is really slow. 25min seria was converted like over little more then hour... Maybe I need different settings?

Converting takes time. Higher the quality, the longer it takes. 1 hour seems about right if you have a pretty decent computer.

Hmm.. Then i was converting avi to 3gp it took only like 30min. Maybe it's easier to convert these files... Whatever I can wait that hour. It's not hard :D

MKV is usually encoded in H.264 and that generally takes a long time to convert, and since all the subs aren't part of the video, that needs to be embedded in which takes further time.

Lately I've been having trouble finding a good converter to make my MKV files to IPOD format. (mp4)

That's not the problem the problem is I'm having trouble finding a converter that allows me to input the subtitle file. I've searched the net to no avail.

I've already demuxxex the mkv file in question to the .ass file needed for subs. Now I just need a proper converter where I can add the sub file.

I just can't seem to find one and I'm starting to go crazy with this.

Any help appreciated.

They are pretty much exactly the same except MKV is open source and doesn't really have any limits on the type of files you can throw in it.
OGM is pretty much a hack job that was created as a temporary measure to allow multiple audio/video/subtitle streams in a single file back in the day. Older anime like Berserk use this because MKV wasn't fully developed then. I doubt nowadays nobody would even think of using this container for projects simply because MKV is much better all around.

Has anyone tried Videora? I;m on a Mac and I don't use Windows Converters. Apparently it's pretty good.

I posted this a few posts back. All To AVI does exactly what you need. It's mainly for converting all those handy container files(OGM and MKV) into AVI's so you can watch them on something else that cannot handle OGM's and MKV's. All To AVI allows you select what audio tracks you want and what subtitle tracks you want for the AVI output. Even change the dimensions of the video for iPod size. http://alltoavi.sourceforge.net/

Of course, you need to convert it to .mp4. So Handbrake, the first program I mentioned, does a real nice job of that after you have it in AVI form. http://handbrake.fr/

I read somewhere and since I read an incredible amounts of things on the net I can't remember where; That if you used videora converter you could use a script to implement the sub file while converting the video file. You only need to name both files the same name with different extensions.

However I've had no good results finding this yet. I think it has something to do with AviSynth or something like that.


I know that AlltoAVI does the job it's just It takes twice the amount of time and there is a loss in video quality sometimes as well as a loss in subtitle quality.

So anyone out there who knows what I'm talking about Please reply!
