Pathetic Forums

A little backstory: There is a local anime convention coming up (in April). The convention has a website with all the info about the convention and a forum where people who go to the convention can talk to each other, socialize, make plans, etc.

I have been going to this convention for a while. This April, I will be going for my fourth time. That means four years will have passed since I first attended the convention. I have not once joined the convention's forum. (Actually, I did join once, but I was hanging out with my friends, and we just trolled the forum, posting sick shit and spoiling anime series. For the lulz. And we were very bored.) A few of my friends, who go to the convention every year, have been avid members of the forum, have told me to join, said it's fun, blah blah blah. Tonight, I finally did it, out of boredom.

It is the lamest forum I have ever seen.

It's a forum for an anime convention, but there is almost no discussion of anime itself. The forum is basically split into three main parts - 1) Info about the convention, registering, activities, etc; 2) Cosplay discussion, with people posting their outfits, no matter how crappy; and 3)Forum games, like the Incoherent Babbling section of Fakku.

The other parts of the forum get almost no attention. I looked in the anime discussion section, and the last topic on the first page got a reply on December 3rd. Here on Fakku, the last topic on the first page of General Discussion got a reply on December 19th. Worse, on the con site, there's just the one section for anime and manga, unlike here, where there's the General Discussion for anime and manga, then the Specific Anime Series, and the Specific Manga Series.

Now, it's understandable that a con site would focus on stuff related to the convention, but why wouldn't anime fans, who attend an anime convention, want to talk about anime?

I don't think I'll become a regular user on the con's forum.

Any other stories of shitty forums you've come across?

fakku is the only place where Ive stuck to the longest... cuz most of the others were either filled with boredom (such as the one of which you spoke of...) or assholes...

Problem with most board are the usual circlejerks that form: Power-abusing mods/admins, old users who think they're better than the rest, the usual assholes and trolls etc.

Nowadays, I usually just stick to the imageboards, because nobody gives a shit how long you've been there or your postcount or whatever.

Therein come the assholes I spoke of...

but my first and only hentai forum has been FAKKU!

i been to quite a few hentai err anime forums
i just usefully lurk around in the shadows, spying on on people's conversions
but some again then i decide to post out of sheer boredom

pathetic forums i been usely just flame the newbs of the forums
for there 1st post "hi there, just saying hi i am new here"
well still quite funny
trolling and flaming dose kill the forums but its what most enjoyable about them

I believe it is the members that make a forum successful.

@ShaggyJebus: Perhaps it is due to a lack of topics which led to the anime discussion section of the forum you mentioned being neglected. Why don't you try starting a couple of new topics in that section over there to garner interest among members? There are times when everyone thinks that somebody else will do it.

As for lame/pathetic forums.. I don't know many but as for G4TV's IRC.. that's lame in my opinion. I made an account a year or two ago and well, the moderators of the chat, along with the members, seem to be stuck-up, "smartasses". I enjoyed watching g4tv on television and all, but the members of their online chat site have no respect from me. Again, it's not really a forum but whatever.[/h]

I thought about doing that. I just need to spend a little more time searching around that forum to see exactly how it works. It looks really bad, really messy, and there are about a dozen mods who could bring the banhammer down on me, so I don't want to do something that could get me banned. Even though it wouldn't be too big a deal, it still feels kind of bad to get banned.

Another thing about this convention's forum - the guy in charge of the convention, the con-chair or whatever, is of course an admin, and he makes tons of stickies where he is pretty much promoting his life outside the convention. He had one sticky where he was asking people to vote for his photographs in some contest. It seemed like an abuse of power. The pictures he took had nothing to do with anime, or the convention, so they're not related at all, and he felt the need to not only make a topic asking for votes, but to make a sticky? I mean, if Jacob entered a contest and needed votes, I'd throw some votes at him, but I think that Jacob would know not to put something on the front page that isn't related to the site at all.

FAKKU forums are actually pretty much the best forums I've come across, and I'm not just saying that. There are a lot of pitfalls to internet forums, and in a great deal of cases, as other people have stated, you have abusive or vindictive mods, idiot members, and general duchebagery rampant. Here, we seem to generally avoid a lot of that.
So good job and shit.

The only other Forums I really liked were part of a site ran by people I knew, and generally consisted of people who knew each other and worked together on various things, and we just didn't all live in the same area. The site worked as a general base for any number of projects and the forum was both for work-related things and general socialization and interests.
But, really, to anyone who didn't already know/work with at least a few members would feel lost and excluded. But I enjoyed it.

I can't particularly remember any forums I've come across that were just shit, though. I would likely just dismiss them as quickly as I noticed they sucked.

I tend to try my damnedest to avoid bad forums. I am not always successful, but usually, so I don't really remember any horror stories.

Well, I do remember that, due to a lax moderation scheme, the Gamepatch forums had to be flushed about twice, but that's hardly a horror story. Just some unruly members with delusions of power.

(Actually, I still laugh whenever I remember "All armies are disbanded by order of God").

Fakku is, hands down, the best forum I've even been a part of. The community is great, both in terms of activity, variety, and behavior. Content pours down from a horn of plenty. The moderation team is so humble as to be mistaken for sagely forum goers with fancy titles. The site's only downtime is usually caused by traffic, and the highest-ups are active parts in what is quite possibly a loving community.

Best. Forum. Ever.

I haven't been to many other forums.

forum life cycle:
-friend's forum, avid user, but eventually just a troll.
-gaia forums-- better quality than some, but too many attention whores.
-search for better forum.......
-here, awesome community, small enough usergroup (less lightning threads) and good mods/admin.

now, I'm thinking of going to another friend's forum, but I doubt I'll abandon this one.

big problems with the ones I've been on:
-no mods (you guys even come down from hentai-olympus to post in normal threads o.O?)
-vindictive mods (ever had a mod "fix" your post?)
-too small community (when nobody has anything to say, nobody says anything)
-too large community (post once-- never see the topic again!)
-too many n00bs (rate me/ugliest chick ever/half assed troll/OHAIGUYS! FLAMEME!)

Well I've liked everything I've seen from this forum so far. Hopefully things will stay strong.

One of the worst that I ever posted on was probably the penny arcade forums. Its still the funniest web comic on the internet but even the strip creators acknowledge that their forums suck but they honestly don't have the time to try and fix them. I was a member there for about 6-7 months before I quit and I only stayed that long because the only tolerable site members happened to be on the comic book forums. I left when I got a two week temp ban for posting a joke cover to Final Crisis and I never came back.

Yup. Bad Mods and Admin, as well as stupid members....read flamers and ignorant FUCK YOU, IM RIGHT types....do tend to make a forum hell.

Must say though that I've been fortunate enough to not stumble across too many bad forums, and I don't stick long after I see any of the above shit going on, it's just not worth it.

I've been a Moderator on mutiple forums over the last 3 years and it's a time consuming but fun job. The problem can be that some people just want to do the moderators job for the title and are useless at it, or worse, ARROGANT.

No such troubles here though... :wink:
