Practical disadvantages in converting MKV to AVI

I am planning in converting all of my video files into avi format, Just because i can't watch them on TV if I burn them on a dvd-r. So what will I be loosing if I convert it all to avi?

Can you play mp4s on said dvd player? If anything like i said in cr, i think, you may end up just losing quality and subs if theyre soft.

The video quality will drop immensely?

What formats are your videos originally in?

The quality will go down. Your subs will come out as a terrible font. That's all.

did you use soft subs or hard sub? is your mkv is a single file or is there is a additional file? (.ass). your quality will drop, but except you're watching it in hdtv i doubtit'll be a problem.

Video quality will go a lot as your converting and avi does not support h264. File size will most likely be destroyed (Alot bigger in some cases). Font may be messed up unless you know what your doing. Depending on the script the size of the font and any typesetting may also be messed up.

Audio will be raped since avi doesn't support aac. I have only seen avi support mp3 and I think ac3.

It's really just not worth the time or effort. Now if everyone encoded like those people at Dattebayo we would have a different story on our hands here.

just buy a new dvd player. mine can play mp4, and i got it for 20$.

like they said. and it's definitely a lot of work specially if you still want it to be of high quality (for avi standards). it think you're better off with a player with mp4 playback and convert from mkv to mp4. i think the loss is minimal unless i'm mistaken.

or save money and by a ps3 :D if you decide to convert it to mp4 :lol:

Yes since mp4 supports aac and h264 but it will still provide a decent amount of quality lose. Almost all the problems I stated the first time will still be present. It's still not really worth the time.

Now I will convert them to mp4.

Before you do that you should extract the font out of the subs and install them on your pc. If not things can go wrong and the font will look funny. Also will mess up some of the typesetting.

Converting altogether is really not a good idea.

Wondering how this turned out for you? Any chance you can upload the converted file and telling the file name of the original. I hear this question alot so im wondering how it turned out and what I can stay to assist someone further in the future.

hmm idk about you but i got HDTV at home so i got any external hardrive put my music and movie crap into it and install VLC player into the external hardrive and use WD TV HD Media Player play anything you wanted on HD and great sub and dont have to bother with all the converting stuff

Instead of VLC I would try mpc in cccp since vlc has a terrible subtitle renderer and is just fail overall. VLC can play near anything but does a bad job of it.
