Does anyone know a program/tool/thing that would either:
a)let me select just the picture of colette, and put it in a white background (instead of that)
b)fill in the backgound for me.

Easy! If I understand your question correctly. When you download Photoshop trial,
Duplicate the layer
use the Magic Wand tool. Click on gray space, should make it look like ants are crawling around the grey spaces. Hit delete and repeat for the other Gray spaces.

Note: If you accidentally delete the image main image no worries just Undo ctrl atl z
Also some times you need to select the inverse. Right click... Select inverse... Done.

To fill the back ground just make a new layer fill it what ever color than place below of the image you want to be on top. In the layers section

You can do the same thing with GIMP, also using the Magic Wand tool.

But now it's getting rid o some of the stuff on the edges, it's really weird. =\

See how in the main picture, the curves and stuff are all smooth and stuff?



That's what it looks like when I'm done with it.
I rushed it, but those parts still look like that even if I take my time.

What you're looking to do is cut the character out of the original image, I believe the common term for graphics designers online is to make a "render" of the character.
The way I personally do it (which I would not generally recommend, however) is the use of the polygonal lasso tool (it's a dropdown under lasso) and select the area I wish to cut out. It takes a while to get used to, but I find I usually get a better cut than with any of the automatic Photoshop tools.

I'm not sure if your using photoshop... At any rate did you use the magic wand or the eraser? Or you could try the pen tool...

It takes FOREVER with a laptop. xD
