The word "Otaku" originally referred to someone else's house or family.
The word got a bad name when in 1989, a man called Tsutomu Miyazaki, who was apparently an avid fan of anime and horror films, killed and raped the dead bodies of four girls aged between 4 and 7 years old, and terrorised the victims' families with Nuisence phonecalls, gory details of what he did to them, and pictures sent to their homes.
There is dispute over whether he
actually was a fan of anime, as some have accused the media of planting pornography when the photos were taken of his home, and were playing on the publics' fears of Otaku in order to cement a conviction.
That's why the Otaku culture is generally frowned upon in Japan.
Pedo Bear is cool.
