well, i'll only use it for the sole purpose of gaming and a bit of photoshoping stuff
but all those letters and numbers you see on the boxes don't make much sense for a guy who only concentrates on blowing stuff up
so... will someone be kind enough to tell a com noob what to look for in a good computer.
well i'm not that ignorant enough to not know what a video card is and what's RAM for
but i don't really know much about models and stuff

Also depends if you want great sound? If its purpose is for gaming? Does that budget include monitor and headphones/speakers?

ok .... wghat i can suggest is that you look for an PC that has an AMD turion x2 CPU , ATI OR nvidia grapics card and the rest is jus common sense ut the bold and ubnderlined parts are the most important

Go for a Core 2 Extreme of some sort. The quads aren't really worth it atm, not that they're bad at all. It's just that not much can utilise all four cores yet, and for sheer power...

1 - 2k budget eh? Well if you wanted the full load (All the way down to the keyboard), you could spend about 1.4k on a decent custom build from Newegg.com and such.
An example would be something along the lines of this... AMD build since they're cheaper and they do the job in consideration of power
Primary focus:
-AMD Phenom II X4 (Initial clock @ 3.0 GHz, but easy to perk up to 3.2-3.4+) This is all you really need because I doubt you'll want Crysis on max.
-Nvidia Geforce 9800 GTX+ at about $130 now? Could be cheaper. Excellent card for everything you need, run most games on max (except crysis)
On a side note, some of you would ask why the hell you'd place Nvidia
on an ATI chipset... but you aren't going to Crossfire anything, no harm.
-Since you're going with a socket AM2+ processor, you'll be getting DDR2 RAM which is completely fine when you compare it to DDR3, both have their pros and cons.
Therefore, I'd get 4 gigs of 1066 freq memory (PC8500) unless you plan on
running an x64 Operating system, where then I'd get 8 gigs... (Just get 4!)
I'd look at the Mushkin brand.. or go with OCZ.
-Lastly, your MB. This is what I consider the be the hardest decision since you need to make sure that it's compatible with everything listed above.
All I can say is that you need to make sure that it's an AM2+ Motherboard
Which is compatible with 1066+ freq RAM, and has a PCI-e slot (duh). Honestly
Make sure the NB (Northbridge) drivers are 790, unless something better was
produced.
Also, lemme make this clear. If you have money... GO INTEL.

I only gave you the primary parts, w/o a detailed explanation really. If you plan on building the computer which is always the cheaper/better method, you need to read up and learn on such things. If you don't want to go with this method then I'd just go and order a barebones kit online which ONLY requires assembly knowledge usually.
