-socket 775 is dead you cant upgrade it and it costs a hell lot more than a amd X3 720(wich btw is far better)
-4870 might be a good choise, but i would suggest 2 4770 in crossfire, cheaper and much better

is there anyone here who at least have some experience of building gaming computers? every post i have read so far souds like fanboys speaking
the first questions you should ask is:
can you assembly the parts yourself or not?
which resulotion are you going to play in?
how much storage do you need?
some general suggestions:
when your budget is under 2k use amd phenom 2 if over go with a intel i7 system
Har drive: use either samsung spinpointf1 or Western digital
Graphics:
the following Graphic-cards is the best you can buy for the moment(price/preformance)
ATI 4770 singel or in crossfire, the best card in the range 110-220$ CF even beats a overclocked 4890
200$(if you can find it that cheap)
Nvidia 260GTX if you plan on going sli in the future
Ram: go with 4gb (2x2gb) 1066mhz(am2+)
Graphics Ram: 512mb is enough if you are going to play in resulotions less that 1600x1200 over that go for the 1gb models.
for more suggestions pm me(i have been building gaming computers for about 5years)
Edit: for OS i would suggest that you go with the Windows7 Beta (download it for free from windows webpage) if not go whit what you like xp or vista.(they both have a lot of flaws)
