The right way and the wrong way

So I hear about it a lot in the irc if it's mentioned, or I hear about it in some other threads of -rep for wrong reasons, but I wanted to hear what everyone thought overall of a good reason to -rep or even +rep and then the wrong reason to -+rep

If I rep someone, it's usually because they contributed something, such as a game, doujin, or whatever. I also usually rep if they make me Lol.

If I -rep someone which isn't nearly as often it's usually because their comments are unnecessary. Trolling or flat out harassing a person I don't find should be go 'unpunished' so to speak. Though if I take the time to do that, I also take the time to report someone. But I've found that some people feel that my reasoning to -rep someone is a wrong reason to do it.

But I think if someone +rep's a person just because they're friends or to back up a negative statement towards another user, I think that's a wrong way to +rep a person. The reason I feel that way is it promotes a bad image on Fakku that they encourage people disrespecting others.

I also think -repping someone because you don't like them or their ideas is a wrong thing to do. And of course 'just for teh lulz' is a wrong reason to do it as well.

I think +-repping just because your friends +-repped another person is also wrong, whether it's positive or negative rep.

What do you guys think?
Oh, and I by no means claim that I've never used the rep system wrong in the past. I can't think of where specifically if I had, but I'm sure I've done it for the wrong reasons before.

I'll rep a guy if he/she makes me lol or gives something or maybe says something that makes sense.

I'll negatively rep if someone makes me mad or if they offend something or someone in a way.

The thing is, I barely rep cos' I'm lazy, but when I do rep it's when it counts. ^_-

-rep for posting a picture of a dog jumping out of a car in the "You laugh you lose" thread is pretty ridiculous in my opinion.

Even though I frowned at the picture afraid the dog might have gotten hurt, I didn't find the picture offensive. If that makes you feel better, Tegumi.

I +rep for people who are contributing to the community in a positive way. Helping a new user such as explaining how certain functions work, adding new doujin,games,etc.

I don't -rep anybody as a rule as the people I would are only encouraged by the fact that you paid attention to them. So now, I just ignore them. So if somebody is being a disruption or a general asshole I just report them and let the mods take care of it. If they choose not to then whatever. Not like I can force them to see the logic behind why I did it.

I dislike the idea of people -repping over having opposing views. My views differ greatly from the vast majority but, I don't go around -repp them for disagreeing with them. In fact, if they construct a good argument I'll +rep them for being so informed.

Not really, I'd want to hear the reasoning for someone who -repped me for that.

Also, I've used my -rep like maybe 3 times since I joined Fakku!.

Just one question over reporting over -repping.

If people do it in this way, would it not be a bother to the mods?

Nikon at one point asked users to start reporting threads more. It's harder for them to read every single thread than it is to have a memo saying 'hey, look here there's a problem'

Then they can use their own judgment and decide how to handle the problem.

What I meant miss, is that what if people will do this for silly reasons.

I've never -repped anyone before and i +rep people who
1. have shared interest/taste as me
2. did something witty
3. someone respectful
4. helped me in anyway or answering my request

Well I +rep people when they've contributed something to the community (if it's uploads I only do it if it's something I really enjoyed or they answered a request I had made) or when someone makes me actually laugh (which I can justify as contributing to the community as good quality jokes make people like myself enjoy being here more). I'll also sometimes +rep people who got -rep I feel was especially undeserved.

I -rep pretty rarely and only when someone is being amazingly offensive, mind bogglingly incorrect, or harming the community in some way. Though usually I do this only if there was nobody I felt equally deserved a +rep.

Of course on a rare occasion I will +/-rep for petty reasons like someone stroked my ego or offended me in some way. This is of course not how things should be done but nobody's perfect, not even me.

I'll +rep someone for being intelligent (also required for making me laugh) and/or helpful. Personal user inclinations are of little influence. I'll also +rep on occasion when I find a '-' unjustified.
I don't -rep anymore. Even if some people deserve it, it creates more drama than it's worth.


Yey - I'm 1,5 elder.

Ideally I'd +rep people for making a well-argued, intelligent post. However, I must admit that in practice I've stopped bothering with that. Those who make intelligent posts know very well that they're above the IQ<10 populace and do not need my feeble encouragement.
Prime example: The SD thread on Prostitution. Reading that (several weeks after the real action occurred), I wanted to hand out some "+valiant effort, but why do you post in a thread that might give you brain AIDS?" to some people. Because while their posts were well-furnished, I felt kinda sorta sorry for them! Hard to express that with +REP. But the aforementioned denizens managed to post quite nicely without the reward of my +REP.

I'd also +rep people who make contributions, fill requests, whatever. However, I rarely ever visit the relevant sections for that to make a real difference.

I generally don't +rep people for making me laugh; in 99.95% of observed cases the amusement value was unintended.

I don't -rep people who post the way Escherichia Coli would, because there's no consequence to me -repping them. Nearly nobody manages to instil outright hatred me, and those few people who do (usually by opting out of the human race) will not be brought on track by -rep. Maybe if it'd mysteriously compel them to terminate themselves, I'd start -repping.

I plus rep for insightful and or standout posts or contributions. I rarely negative rep, and do so for offensive/trolling type material. Although I once accidentally negative repped the wrong person and had to contact Jacob about it.
