i want to go to japan but to the people who have been i have a few questions so i can be ready.

1. how much money should you take? and which is better cash or card?

2. did you set it all up yourself or use some company (orbitz,priceline etc...)?

3. i want to bring back if i can a katana or something like that (of coarse I'll mail it back) a real one. has anyone of heard of a place? (i"m a sword collector that's why.)

Man I hate the Yen rate right now. I remember that some shops used to say the rate was always 100 yen for a dollar, but now that the Yen is stronger they actaully use the going rate (98 yen to a dollar last I looked). I miss the days my dollars stretched.

Also you can't get a REAL Katana, not a professionally sharpened one anyways. Because if you did, you couldn't ship it because it is a WEAPON, and you can't ship weapons. But regardless, the best places to get one is to ask around for a folk artist. The Government actually pays people to keep the folk arts of japan, such as sword making, to keep the traditions alive so...

I'm definitely going to Japan when I can afford it. Probably after I'm done ALL my schooling. I'll probably go around the time of Comiket, as that seems to pique my interest.

when is the best time of the year to go. (other then always) I don't mind when, but I would like to know when from those who have gone.

Akiba is also good for the interesting stories to tell to your friends back home. Although it's mostly the electronics district, it's more of a hobby district. xD My bf saw this couple where the guy was dressed in bondage & was crawling on all fours where his lady friend was being a dom.

I think everything in Japan is quite expensive since Japan is #2 country which has the most expensive cost for living.

Actually, right now I don't get fair exchange for my dollar so it is even more expensive. Example, I go out to eat at a buffet and the price is ¥1100. Well there was a time when the exchange rate was ¥120 yen to $1.00. So in a way it is like you get an extra $.20 cents for your dollar right? So the shop had a sign that said: ¥100 is always = $1.00
This was to make it easier to pay since it was troublesome to keep up with the exchange rate. However, now that the yen rate is favorable, that sign is gone. It is now replaced with a sign that changes daily, saying what the exact exchange rate is now such as: ¥95 yen is = $1.00

So now I am paying extra because the dollar isn't worth as much as the yen is. I wouldn't be mad if they didn't hold double standards, but they aren't exactly being fair IMO.

I wish I could go to Japan. >_<

I'm creating a poor man's guide to japan travels.

If your in Tokyo, go sleep under Shinjuku station. When its not WINTER.

Also go look for some homey bridges.

I managed to sleep under a bridge near Misato-ku station, which was next to a river, in the summer.

It felt good with sparce people at night, though the bugs were a problem haha.

There are also shops in AKihabara which I remember, but for life of me can't tell with kanji, where you can get good models and figures, and can compare prices between them.

You can have one shipped into the US, as long as it doesnt have an edge, at least thats the way it was some years back. Kinda defeats the purpose though.
