Who's got the time anyway?

Lately ive been trying very hard to write a story for the lemons forum area. But you'd be surprised how incredibly hard it is to match up motivation and free time. I always end up writing a couple paragraphs, then get bored, end up hating it, and deleting it just to go play halo or GTA... -_-"

This fact is making Church a crabby girl and its getting really annoying. So i was wondering if the people had any ideas.

How do i keep myself on task?

Stay up for 72 hours when you've got the time. Then, try writing down a tonne of nonsense. Then sleep when you get to it. Revise, edit, add more. Go go go!

Seems simple enough. Problem is with College, work, family, friends, 72 hours of free time will be years from now. Thanks though. Any other ideas?

Take ideas from your daily life. If your life is boring, take that and add a little of what you would like to see in your life. Don't make it painfully obvious about who you are if you don't want that, but just taking your life and writing it in a different setting sometimes helps me when I want to write a story.

Well I can't help with lemons, but for normal writing, I find it easy to come up with a skeleton of what you want, then a beginning and an end. All you have to to then is fill in the middle parts.

It has worked pretty well for me. In talks of having a novel published now.

Usually I'll take a break from something if I don't have motivation to do it. People will be able to tell (especially in writing) when the author didn't put their heart into it.

Just do what you want, and some time it'll pop in your head with what you'll want to do, whether you be in class, sleeping, or out doing errands.

I suppose that would be quite difficult. I have all the time in the world and I still struggle to write them. It seems like I have limited opportunities when I am actually in the mood to write them, and if you happen to be busy when that mood arises then there really isn't much you can do.

Come next week I know I'm not gonna have that much free time. My college classes start up again.

Anyway, as far as keeping on track, I usually don't. Most of my best ideas have come from being off-track from other, more important things (such as a Calculus class I was bored shitless in).

There's also the option of playing GTA until you get sick of it, then keeping yourself on task as a result of having nothing else to do.

@Church: I would suggest not deleting it no matter what you write and just try and re-write it better. If you're a beginner at writing you should focus less on being perfect and more on just being able to get a whole cohesive story together at all. You can worry about them being good stories when you're more practiced.

What will keep you in writing is a big idea. For example, the climax of Romeo & Juliet, then the writer will write the things that will lead to it. Create climaxes first then the pre-climax parts. Make topic that you're into fantasizing it, because when a person fantasizes, they create a story unintentionally.

A GREAT piece of advice is that you stop deleting your stuff, even if you hate it. Go back, look at what you hated, look at why did you hated it, and then see what you liked about it. Often, stories that are told are the product of several writings, and characters will be born from the ashes of your discarded stories.

Ok, being serious for one moment..

Whenever I had a hard time writing(essays and shit)
I always put on some music to get rid of distractions so I could concentrate better.
I've always kinda tried to find the entire purpose of the paper.
As in, what do you want the reader to know, and what you as the writer think about it.
I'd always tried to get that straight first.
Second, I'd tried to come with a good introduction. Theres no point in writing something if you start off with a shitty intro and make the reader bored. You gotta start with something exciting or interesting to grab the readers attention.
Now the real problem comes here. After you write a dashing intro, you gotta think of something afterwords so it doesn't sound like you were just bluffing. This, you gotta work on by yourself. I'd usually just bullshit around here and turn it in.

Never had experience with writing outside of school. Come on, writing is boring as shit.

Oh, and if you hate what you wrote, write more about how much you hate it and then start writing a lot of cuss words. After you calm down, erase the cuss words and the writing about how you hate it, and keep writing. I've (surprise!) never written "lemons", but here are things that help me:
Lay down a rough draft first. Doesn't matter whether you whip up a classic "mind map" (I don't) or just jot down some keywords per chapter (I do). Personally, whenever writing research papers or articles, I would come up with the general structure very early on (mostly the same day as answering the CFP, while laying awake in bed), then just take quick notes of that with a dictaphone. Structured brainstorming, so to speak.

When you're working on one part and get stuck, don't stop writing. Instead go to a different part and work on that (this is where the rough draft comes in handy). Discipline is really incredibly important if you want to churn out writing in high volume. Don't suffer any distractions. Instead, set yourself a realistic goal of what you're going to write in the next two hours. Then set yourself to work and don't allow yourself any distractions until the two hours are up. When that's done, take a short break and get your mind off things, then go back to work and plow through the next two hours.

Don't be afraid to delete things you hate. It can be a very cleansing and frankly uplifting experience to wipe the slate and start over instead of fumbling forever with something you loathe. I personally revel in deletion. However, I strongly advise that before hitting [shift]-[del], [enter], you take a parting glance at your writing and try to analyze what went wrong. What made it sound stupid? What caused you to hit a snag?

Beware, though. What may seem like low-quality writing is usually the quality of the work degrading in your mind. Reading the same thing over and over as you analyze it instantly makes it seem worse to you. Best option for revision is an honest friend.
