It really depends on your RAM. I guess it works fine if you have enough, but anything less than like 2GB is going to make your computer slow to a crawl. I only have 1024 and Vista was just unacceptable, but with Linux I'm able to do a lot more without my computer chugging.

Not at all. Linux isn't as complicated as it used to be. Hell, you could burn Ubuntu as a .iso file and have a trial DVD to run on your computer so you can use Windows and Ubuntu at same time for awhile to see if you like it or not, and if you do you can install Ubuntu straight from the DVD.
Really the most complicated thing is removing/editing the partitions on your hard drive from Vista, but that only implies if you want to dual-boot between Linux and Windows, if you are going to wipe the computer and go straight Linux you wouldn't have to worry about that step at all.

Well that is by no means complicated either, but it would be the most complicated part of installing.
